2022-23 NHL Team Preview: Detroit Red Wings

The 2021-22 season will be remembered in Detroit as the year Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond arrived on the scene. The team finished sixth in the Atlantic Division with a 32-40-14 record and 74 points. Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi, Robby Fabbri and Jakub Vrana were among the Red Wings players who missed a lot of time last season.

The Detroit Red Wings have been active this summer, signing David Perron, Andrew Copp and Dominik Kubalik. Peron has been a consistent scorer for the last three seasons with the St. Louis Blues. Coppe's contract is a bit longer, but it's a lot cheaper than Kuba's. Kubala was named to the 2020 All-Rookie Team. He could be a key part of helping Detroit's power play improve on its dismal 16.3% conversion rate from last season.

The Detroit Red Wings' defensive lineup for the 2021-22 season is Ben Chiarot, Olli Maatta, Danny DeKeyser, Gustav Lindstrom and Mark Pysyk. Mark is expected to miss the first few months of the season with a torn Achilles tendon. The team won four Stanley Cups in a decade. They are looking for a new defensive player to replace the players who were injured or ineffective last year.

The Detroit Red Wings signed Ville Husso from the St. Louis Blues to a three-year, $4.75 million contract. Alex Nedeljkovic will play behind Huso and Olkinuora this season. Jussi Olinukar won gold medal at 2022 World Championships. Sebastian Cossa is a top goalie prospect.

Jeff Blashill is absent from the Detroit Red Wings' team. Derek Lalonde will replace him as head coach. Lalond helped the Tampa Bay Lightning win the Stanley Cup in 2020 and 2021. Bob Boughner, Alex Tanguay and Jay Varady will be on Lalonda's team, with Taguay the only returnee from Blashesill's time in Detroit.

Simon Edvinsson is the only rookie on the projected Red Wings roster. He was selected by Steve Yzerman with the sixth pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. Edvinnsson had 19 points in 44 games for Frölunda in Swedish Hockey League last season. His 17 assists led all U20 players in that league.

Edvinsson is a 19-year-old rookie. He is expected to play as a top-four partner for Seider.

Robby Fabbri tore his left ACL twice as a member of the St. Louis Blues. He suffered another ACL injury to his right knee at the end of last season. It's unclear when he could be ready to return in 2022-23.

Tyler Bertuzzi scored 30 goals in 68 games last season. He has one year left on his current contract, which carries a cap of $4.75 million. Bertuzi is a free agent next summer.

The Detroit Red Wings are expected to have a respectable season in 2022-23. However, they will probably finish fifth in the Atlantic Division. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers are the favourites. Boston Bruins should stay competitive after Charlie McAvoy and Brad Marchand return. Ottawa Senators are also a contender.
