3 Free Agents the Mavericks Will Regret Not Signing This Offseason

There's no doubt that Reggie Bullock's offseason departure left a hole in the Mavericks' backcourt. He was one of their best defensive guards last season but joined the Spurs on a three-year, $30 million deal at the end of June.

With Bullock moving across the state, Jevon Carter would've been a cheap yet suitable replacement. The Maywood, IL native signed with the Chicago Bulls for three years as well, however, his average annual value is only $6.5 million compared to Bullock's $10 million.

Nevertheless, Carter is a plus-defender who tied his personal best of 0.8 steals per game while also averaging 0.4 blocks across 81 outings with the Milwaukee Bucks. He also finished with a plus-1.2 defensive box plus/minus, which was tied for third-best on the Bucks.

On top of his defensive play being attractive, Carter also would've fit in with the rest of the Mavs' shooters. After averaging 1.8 threes on 42.1% shooting, it's hard not to like the idea of what it would've looked like if Doncic was feeding Carter open looks all season long.

Do I think Carter would've turned the Mavericks into instant championship favorites? No, but I do believe that their title odds of championship glory would be better than they pursued him this summer.
