The United Nations is warning that forcibly deporting Afghans from Pakistan could lead to severe human rights violations. Pakistan recently announced a crackdown on migrants living in the country illegally, including 1.7 million Afghans, telling them to return to their home countries by Oct. 31 to avoid mass arrest and deportation. The U.N. said Saturday that all returns need to be voluntary, dignified and without any pressure. It wants Pakistan to continue protecting vulnerable Afghans who have sought safety in the country and could be at imminent risk if forced to return. Pakistan denies targeting Afghans.

Rescuers in India have found more bodies as they dug through slushy debris and ice-cold water in a hunt for survivors after a glacial lake burst through a dam. Hundreds of rescuers recovered six more bodies early Saturday, taking the death toll to 47. At least 150 people are still missing. The flood began shortly after midnight Wednesday, when the waters of a glacial lake overflowed, cracking open the biggest hydroelectric dam in Sikkim state. The icy waters then cascades through towns in the valley below, where it killed scores of people. Bad weather has made rescue efforts more challenging. Police say nearly 4,000 tourists were stranded in two locations in the northern part of the state where access was severely restricted as the floods had washed away roads.

China said in a statement earlier this week that it hoped the visit would “contribute to a more objective understanding of China in the U.S. Congress.”

He has just finished directing a Kabuki play, a Japanese musical theater form dating back four centuries, but it has been re-scripted and directed Yamada-style. Yamada says all his works explore what it means to be human.

The U.S.-Mexico border and immigration are creating political and security challenges for President Joe Biden. Even some of his top allies worry about those issues' effects on his reelection chances. Some Democrats across the country are distancing themselves from the White House. And two moves by Biden this week to approve border wall construction and deportations of some Venezuelans angered conservatives and liberals alike. Biden's reelection campaign counters that Republicans have offered more fear-mongering than actual solutions and that ginning up false hysteria on the border hasn't worked for GOP candidates before.

An estimated $1.4 billion Powerball jackpot that has been growing since July is about to be on the line. Saturday night’s jackpot is the world’s fifth-largest lottery prize after rolling over for 33 consecutive drawings. The last time someone claimed the top prize was July 19. That streak trails the record of 41 draws set in 2021 and 2022. The scarcity of Powerball jackpot winners reflects the game’s daunting odds of 1 in 292.2 million. The $1.4 billion prize is for a sole winner who is paid through an annuity, with annual checks over 30 years. Most jackpot winners opt for cash, which for Saturday night’s drawing would be an estimated $614 million.
