The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India contested during April and May of every year by teams representing eight cities in the country. The league was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in Indian (BCCI) in 2008.
The Indian Premier League was founded on 20 September 2007. The first season of the IPL was played on 18 April 2008. It was broadcast live on YouTube in 2010. In 2015, the 2015 IPTL season contributed $11.5 billion to the Indian economy. The prize money for the inaugural season was US$3 million.
The Indian Premier League has been involved in several controversies. In 2013, three Rajasthan Royals players were arrested on charges of spot-fixing. The scandal rocked the tournament and led to the suspension of the players. Chennai Super Kings team principal Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested in 2015 on the charges he accepted bribes to influence matches. The IPL has also been hit by financial controversies, including the sale of TV rights for a fraction of their actual value.
Despite controversies, the IPL remains one of the most popular cricket tournaments in the world.
