Jason Kubler v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

This will be their first match.

Kubler Making Madrid Debut

Jason Kubler hasn’t played in Madrid before and it will certainly be an experience for the Australian. He’s a rather solid clay player posting a 20-5 record on that surface last year but this year he’s only 5-3. It’s been somewhat of a solid season for him overall with a 14-9 record and it comes after a good one last year.

The Australian plays pretty much like most Aussies do. He has a solid serve with solid movement and solid groundstrokes. His best tennis comes on faster surfaces and he can certainly be beaten on clay.

Madrid is a unique court so it’s not impossible for him to have a really good outing here. If he serves well and keeps the rallies short he can certainly find himself winning a couple of matches. The key for him will be to stay consistent with the serve.

The opponent is a very good one who is playing some of the best tennis he has played in years so it will be very tricky to win. He will have a shot though but will need a good effort.

Lajovic Wins Banja Luka

The last time Dusan Lajovic played a tennis match was in Banja Luka beating Andrey Rublev in the final of that event. He’s beaten very good players that week such as Novak Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic and it’s been generally a good year for him.

He is 17-10 on the year which is almost half of the wins he accumulated last year (30). 15 of those came on clay and that’s hardly a surprise as it’s his best surface and has always been. He’s 15-6 on that surface and Madrid could see him earn a few more wins.

He generally didn’t play that well on it because he prefers somewhat slower conditions but last year saw him reach the 3rd round with wins over Borna Coric and Casper Ruud.

I expect him to play another solid event, especially after the good run in Banja Luka and a generally solid level this year. By rule, players struggle after winning a trophy but he’ll have a few days to rest between the matches which should help with the fatigue.

Kubler v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

Lajovic is the favourite in this match and for good reason. He’s really solid on clay and plays attacking making him a solid fit here. I expect him to win simply because he’s played a bit better on clay than Kubler so far.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Lajovic to win: 2/5 ()
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Lajovic to win in straight sets: 6/5 ()
