Predictions for the Amanda Nunes vs. Irene Aldana main event

The latest UFC 289 betting odds are firmly in favor of a Nunes win. Looking through the lines at our top-rated US sportsbooks, the Lioness is anywhere from a -315 to -375 favorite. That might seem a little unfair on Aldana who is currently ranked fifth in the division. However, when you compare the stats, Nunes clearly has the edge.

Nunes has beaten the best in two divisions and, as a bantamweight, she’s won 13 of her 22 fights by KO. Perhaps even more impressively, she’s finished 14 of her fights in the first round. That suggests she starts fast and hits hard. That could be a problem for Aldana as her stats show she absorbs 5.71 significant strikes per minute.

How long can Aldana survive?

However, the fact she absorbs blows hasn’t been a major problem for Aldana so far as only two of her six losses have been by KO/TKO. The problem though is that Aldana has never faced anyone like Nunes. She hits like a Mac truck and, if she finds her range early, Aldana might take so much punishment that she can’t continue.

Having said that, Aldana did put on a gritty performance against Macy Chiasson in her last fight. Even though it was tough, she got the win in round three. Surviving for that long against Nunes will be a lot tougher, but Aldana has shown she’s capable of biting down on her gum shield when it matters.

The question, however, is can she do it over five rounds? This is a championship fight and Nunes is regarded as the best female to ever do it. These factors suggest it will be an uphill battle for Aldana. Of course, MMA betting odds are there to be broken. But, on this occasion, the current sentiment is certainly on the side of Nunes.

Amanda Nunes' form and last fights

Nunes looked almost unbeatable before she lost the bantamweight title to Julia Peña. She regained her title by winning the rematch in July, and UFC 289 was supposed to settle the score between Nunes and Peña. However, with Peña out, Nunes will face Aldana on June 10 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada.

Based on her previous form, it’s easy to see why the Nunes vs. Aldana betting odds are in favor of the champ. With wins over Peña, Megan Anderson, and Felicia Spencer, Nunes definitely has momentum on her side. However, the submission loss to Peña showed she’s not invincible. If Aldana can avoid big shots from Nunes, she may be able to upset the latest UFC 289 odds.

Irene Aldana's form and last fights

Aldana enters UFC 289 with a record of 14 wins and six losses. She’s also riding a two-fight win streak thanks to TKO victories over Yana Santos and Macy Chiasson. The win over Santos was impressive. Aldana displayed crisp striking under pressure and eventually landed killer blows late in the first round.

Aldana’s performance against Chiasson was scrappy and the finish was somewhat fortunate. However, the up-kick to Chiasson’s liver earned Aldana the win and proved she’s still dangerous deep into a tough fight.

What Aldana showed in her last two fights is that she’s capable of clean strikes and head movement. That will be critical against a heavy hitter like Nunes. However, she’s never fought over five rounds, and the last time she faced a championship-level fighter in Holly Holm, she lost. That’s why Aldana is the UFC 289 betting underdog.

Betting tips for Amanda Nunes vs. Irene Aldana

Have we got any UFC 289 betting tips? Of course, we have! The following odds and insights could help you get more from Nunes vs. Aldana.

Nunes -315 vs. Aldana +260 (DraftKings)

New customers can bet $5 at DraftKings and get $200 in bonus cash. That’s a great offer and one you could use for the Nunes vs. Aldana fight. Indeed, with the outright odds offering little in terms of value on either fighter, you need a good reason to bet on Aldana.

She’s the heavy underdog in this fight, so even at odds of +260, it’s a tough bet to make. However, if you can guarantee yourself a return, regardless of the outcome, that’s a positive. So, if you use our registration link to join DraftKings and bet $5 on Aldana, you’ll lock up one of two results:

  1. You win the bet, make a profit, and get some bonus cash
  2. You lose the bet but bank some bonus cash

Pick a parlay +724 (BetMGM)

All the signs point to Nunes beating Aldana at UFC 289, but -350 odds at BetMGM aren’t particularly attractive. However, one thing BetMGM does better than most US online sportsbooks is parlays. It often runs UFC parlay specials, so look out for those ahead of June 10.

We put together our own parlay featuring Nunes and three other fighters we think can win. You can add these names to your BetMGM bet slip and get odds of +724: Amanda Nunes, Charles Oliveira, Dan Ige, and Eryk Anders.

Look for Nunes to win late (Unibet)

Nunes vs. Aldana is a championship fight, so take that into consideration when you’re betting. Nunes has experience over five rounds, Aldana doesn’t. Fighting for an extra 10 minutes isn’t easy and, if Nunes can’t get it done early, her chances of winning late should improve.

This isn’t guaranteed, of course. However, you should be able to extract more value from the latest UFC 289 betting odds by looking at the round betting lines at Unibet. Picking Nunes to win in round four could be profitable on this occasion.

Which UFC records does Amanda Nunes currently hold?

Amanda Nunes holds multiple UFC records and, for many, she’s the greatest female fighter in history. The Brazilian is the UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion and Bantamweight Champion, but those aren’t her only accolades. Nunes is also the top pound-for-pound female fighter according to the UFC rankings.

She’s also a two-time bantamweight champion and the first woman in history to hold two UFC titles simultaneously. Amanda Nunes is also the only ever fighter (male or female) to defend her two belts whilst holding them both simultaneously.

She’s the UFC betting favorite heading into the fight against Irene Aldana. Her record of 22 wins (14 by KO) and five losses trumps that of Aldana (14 wins and six losses).

Who did Irene Aldana replace for the UFC 289 and why?

Irene Aldana replaced Julianna Peña at 289. Peña suffered a rib injury in May and, soon after, UFC President Dana White announced Aldana as the replacement. Aldana is currently fifth in the UFC’s women’s bantamweight division and enters the fight with a record of 14 wins and six losses.

Which undercard fights should I pay attention to before the Amanda Nunes vs. Irene Aldana main event?

There are plenty of world-class fights on the undercard of UFC 289, including Charles Oliveira vs. Beneil Dariush. The two were scheduled to fight in May but the lightweight bout was canceled due to undisclosed injury for Oliveira.

However, the former lightweight champion is back to full fitness and looking to return to winning ways after losing the belt to Islam Makhachev at UFC 280. Dariush is a perennial contender in the UFC and comes into the June 10 fight on an eight-fight win streak.

Other fights making noise within the UFC 289 betting markets are Dan Ige vs. Nate Landwehr and Marc-André Barriault vs. Eryk Anders.
