Angels begin retooling for 2023 with series of trades, including $59 million in savings
The Angels made three trades before the MLB trade deadline on Tuesday. Raisel Iglesias was traded to the Atlanta Braves for Tucker Davidson and Jesse Chavez. Brandon Marsh was sent to Philadelphia Phillies for catching prospect Logan O'Hoppe. Noah Syndergaard was sold to Phillies in a separate deal for Mickey Moniak and minor league outfielder Jadiel Sanchez. The deals freed up about $59 million worth of salary commitments. Manager Phil Nevin will go with a committee at closer in the short term. The team needs to field a winning team if Shohei Ohtani wants to stay.
Angels called up Jose Rojas and designated David MacKinnon for assignment. Janson Junk will start on Thursday instead of José Suarez. Angels signed 18 of the 19 players picked in last month's draft.
