Joshua has to win in style

Joshua had been expecting to face old foe Dillian Whyte this weekend as he continues to work his way back towards a world title shot, but he will now take on 39-year-old Helenius as a replacement.

On paper, Helenius is an easier task, but Joshua had prepared for Whyte and now comes up against a very different type of fighter – albeit one he should be expected to beat comfortably.

The ‘Nordic Nightmare’ has never challenged for a world title but has come up against a former world champion. Deontay Wilder made his return to action after losing his WBC crown to Tyson Fury and made light work of Helenius, winning with a first-round knockout.

That defeat by Wilder almost sets the tone for what Joshua has to do on Saturday. A first-round win isn’t required but he does have to win in style and a professional display accompanied by a points victory – like the one he put in against Jermaine Franklin last time out – probably won’t cut it here if he has serious hopes of becoming a world champion again.

Joshua should control the early rounds but he will have to force the issue as the fight progresses and by the middle rounds the Briton should be expected to go for the stoppage, so backing Joshua at 4/6 to win in rounds 4-6 stands out.

Tip: Anthony Joshua to win in rounds 4-6 @ 9/4 with Betfred

AJ can claim a true KO

Backing Joshua to win by KO/TKO or disqualification doesn’t offer a great deal of value, so the 7/2 on offer for a KO in the exact method of victory market could be the way to go.

Helenius has four defeats in a 36-fight career, three of which have been via stoppages. All of those have been KOs rather than TKOs.

The knockout wins may not be quite so frequent for Joshua as they were earlier in his career, but he still boasts impressive power and his last stoppage win against Kubrat Pulev in 2020 was via KO.

Tip: Anthony to win by KO @ 7/2 with Betfred

Knockdown price appeals

Helenius may have been felled by Wilder in the first round but there is no shame in that. The American is comfortably the biggest puncher in the heavyweight division and Joshua just cannot compete in that regard.

The Finn is a tough competitor and carried on after being knocked down in his first loss to Johann Duhaupas back in 2016.

There have been at least two knockdowns prior to any stoppages in seven of Joshua’s last 14 fights and he has been sent to the canvas and fought on a couple of times in his career himself. As such, the 1/1 available on over 1.5 knockdowns looks good ahead of this hastily arranged heavyweight contest.

Tip: Over 1.5 total knockdowns @ 1/1 with Betfred
