Athletics vs. Mariners prediction and odds for Wednesday, May 24 (Fade Ken Waldichuk)

The Seattle Mariners have a chance to guarantee that they’ll win their four-game set with the Oakland A’s on Wednesday night, and they’re favored to do so.

The Mariners won on Monday and Tuesday against Oakland, pushing themselves back to .500 on the season.

Rookie Bryce Miller (2-1, 1.42 ERA) has been elite for the M’s, and he’ll get the ball against another young starter tonight. Lefty Ken Waldichuk (1-3, 6.85 ERA) gets his 10th appearance of the season for Oakland in this game.

With the Mariners set as massive favorites, how should we bet on this AL West matchup?

There’s no way I’m betting on Waldichuk with how he’s started this season, especially since his advanced numbers show that he may be even worse than one would think.

Waldichuk has a Fielding Independent Pitching of 7.28 this season, and he’s in the 10th percentile in expected ERA and expected slugging percentage against.

That’s going to be problematic, even against a Seattle offense that is just 27th in MLB in OPS against lefties.

Meanwhile, Miller is having a terrific first Major League season, allowing just four runs across four starts.

Waldichuk has allowed at least three runs in all but one start this season. Given the fact that the A’s have one of the worst offenses in baseball, I can’t imagine they’ll be able to keep up against Miller if Waldichuk stays to form.
