Despite being unbeaten so far in their Champions League journey for 2023/24, Atletico Madrid have not particularly impressed and have only managed one victory from three games. The other two clashes resulted in honours even, with their latest game being a stunner at Celtic Park in which Atletico were forced to come from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw.

In their domestic league La Liga, Atletico have been decent and are still in the title race, just six points behind leaders Real Madrid with a game in hand. They were upset last time out in a 2-1 loss to Las Palmas, and one thing is certain with a Diego Simeone coached side; a response is coming to that surprise defeat.

Celtic are in a familiar position at home, on top of the Scottish Premiership and on course to win another league title under returning gaffer Brendan Rodgers. They do not seem to be missing Ange Postecoglou, who is working wonders at Spurs in the Premier League, but the standard these teams face week in week out are miles apart and we expect Atletico to make amends for dropping two points at Celtic park last time out in the Champions League.

Atletico Madrid vs Celtic Tips

Atletico Madrid are a formidable force at home and have been for years since their transformation into a definitive European powerhouse under Diego Simeone. The bedrock of their success has always been a mean defence but that seems to have slipped recently, with Los Colchoneros not keeping a clean sheet at the Civitas Metropolitan Stadium all year despite winning every game!

Simeone will undoubtedly eventually get his side back on course when it comes to the art of solidity at the back and although Celtic are free-scoring in Scotland and bagged two against Atletico last time out, this game with the hosts smarting from poor recent results, is ripe for a bite back and I wouldn't be surprised to see Atletico win to nil.

Nevertheless, with their appalling lack of clean sheets perhaps it is more wise to back the home side in the handicap market to cover ourselves should the defensive woes rear their ugly head. Celtic are no mugs but looking through Atletico's side they should have too much class and the expected return of Saul in midfield is a major boost. Atletico have moved towards a more possession dominant style of play this season and Saul is key to that.

He missed the surprise loss to Las Palmas and it was clear the capital city club missed his metronomic passing in the centre of the park. The other areas of the field in which Atletico are levels above their opponents come between the sticks, with Jan Oblak still one of the best keepers in world football, and the frontline. Griezmann and Morata is a world class strike partnership and I'd expect them to fire against the travelling Scots.

Alvaro Morata To Score 2+ Goals

Alvaro Morata has divided opinion throughout his career as a top level striker. Some rate him as a decent bet to lead the line for any side, while others are perplexed as to how he has managed to stay playing for elite sides for so long and to secure so many big money moves around Europe.

The reality is that he is pretty good when he's good, and pretty poor when he's bad. The differentiating factor with the Spaniard seems simply to be confidence, and Diego Simeone has instilled that in him certainly this campaign. A record of 7 goals in 10 appearances in La Liga is a decent return (interestingly his strike partner Antoine Griezmann has the same number in a game more) and his three from three in the Champions League breeds confidence.

Delving deeper into Morata's stats, it is clear the theory about his confidence still rings true as in two of the five La Liga games in which he has scored a goal, he has gone on to score another. In 50& of the games he has scored in in the UCL, he notched a brace and as such I am wiling to back the bagsman to double up again here at a tasty looking 4/1.

Morata is the focal point for Atletico's attacks and although with a partisan crowd roaring them on in Glasgow Celtic managed to go toe to toe with their higher profile opponents, I'd expect Atletico to dominate from the word go here. If Morata can convert an early chance, the stats prove he is likely to find his way back onto the scoresheet so hopefully this comes to pass in a convincing win for the favourites.
