Autumn International Series: England rugby in disarray after Springbok thrashing

South Africa beat England 27-13 at Twickenham on Saturday. England are in disarray after the Autumn International Series. Charlie Inglefield analyses five key areas that England needs to change if they are to make an impression at the 2023 World Cup.

Eddie Jones needs to pick players on form and not reputation. England's front row was ineffective and the midfield was pedestrian. Ollie Lawrence, Cadan Murley, Henry Arundell, Raffi Quirke and Zak Mercer could be considered for the Six Nations. England have regressed since the 2019 World Cup. They were thrashed by South Africa in the Autumn International Series.

England lost to South Africa in the Autumn International Series. England's captaincy should be handed over to Courtney Lawes or Ellis Genge. Marcus Smith and Owen Farrell's partnership has not worked. They need to change the number ten jersey. Smith has a long test career in front of him. Farrell needs to concentrate on his own game.

England's attack needs revamp. Owen Farrell, Ollie Lawrence, Manu Tuilagi and Henry Slade should start against Scotland in the Six Nations. Anthony Watson, Tommy Freeman and Cadan Murley are other options. England lost to South Africa in Autumn International Series. England fans hope that Tuilaagi can make it to the World Cup. Jonny May and Jack Nowell had their moments in autumn internationals.

Jonny Hill, Alex Coles and Luke Cowan-Dickie were repeat offenders during the Autumn International Series. Hill has been called out a number of times this year and if he can't keep his discipline in check then he should be replaced. England have been conceding over 10 penalties a game for too long.

England's management needs to make a decision on Eddie Jones' future. England have won 5 out of 12 games in the last 12 months. They have nine games to go until the World Cup. Matt Proudfoot's credentials have to be considered. Anthony Seibold is heading back to Australia this week. If Jones is to get sacked, he needs held to account. If not, the team needs some changes.
