Barcelona will meet La Liga club to finalise transfer for €8 million veteran star

According to SPORT, Barcelona want to wrap up the signing of Oriol Romeu by the end of the week. Negotiations are on track and are progressing in the right direction. The two clubs are set to meet in the next few hours to reach an agreement over the transfer.

Girona ask €8 million for the star midfielder and refuse to compromise on the player’s release clause. However, the Catalans are making efforts to work out an alternate deal structure.

Barcelona hope to reduce the fixed fee involved to between €4 million to €5 million. The rest will arrive in variables based on the 31-year-old’s participation and performance.

If the aforementioned proposal is not possible, the possibility of a player exchange cannot be ruled out. With the Blaugranas crippled by their financial situation, they could sacrifice one of Nico Gonzalez or Estanis Pedrola in exchange for the defensive midfielder.

As of earlier today, Barcelona were just one step away from completing the signing of Romeu. With personal terms already agreed with the star, it is only a matter of negotiating the final details with Girona that remains.

The La Liga side, however, refuses to give up easily. Pere Guardiola, the Chairman of Girona’s Board of Directors, spoke to the media earlier today and insisted that they were planning the upcoming season with the midfielder.

“We have said from the first day that we are planning the season with him inside, he is very important for us. Our position is clear, there is no issue at the moment.”

Xavi Hernandez sees it as non-negotiable that Barcelona sign a new midfielder for the pivot role. All factors considered, Romeu is the Catalans’ best bet and the goal is to incorporate him before the preseason tour to the USA. After all, it is Barcelona’s first season without the legendary Sergio Busquets pulling the strings.
