Bayern Munich in Danger of Creating a Bundesliga Title Race

Bayern Munich’s aims at the start of each season stand in stark contrast to those of neutral soccer fans throughout Germany. The latter group pines for a genuine Bundesliga title race, the type which has been all too rare during a decade in which Bayern have been crowned champions 10 times in a row.

The Bavarians themselves strive to open up plenty of ground at the top of the table as quickly as possible. The ideal position for them is a healthy cushion at the summit of the standings, providing Bayern with welcome breathing space which allows them to dedicate most of their attention to the Champions League once the knockout phase comes around each February.

Before the domestic campaign paused for World Cup 2022, Bayern held a four-point advantage in the first place. The hope was that by the time of the first leg of their last-16 tie against Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain on Valentine’s Day, Julian Nagelsmann’s side would be a minimum of nine points clear of the chasing pack.

That now seems highly unlikely. Bayern have hit the ground trudging since the Bundesliga’s return from its customary winter break. A 1-1 draw away to RB Leipzig went down as a decent result, but the same scoreline at home to Koln led to fierce criticism of the team and the coaching staff. 

Bayern’s lead at the top has been trimmed to three points - and with some tricky fixtures on the horizon, things could get worse before they get better. The German champions need to bounce back with a victory in the late game on Saturday, but Eintracht Frankfurt will not lie down at the Allianz Arena.

Frankfurt Are Contenders in Potentially Thrilling Top-Four Race

Just as German soccer followers hope for an entertaining title race, the battle to qualify for the Champions League has the potential to be hugely exciting.

It is worth pointing out that we are still only halfway through the campaign and plenty can change between now and May. Teams will rise and fall, and the battle to finish in the top four will no doubt lose one or two contenders in the coming months.

Ahead of this weekend, though, just four points separate Union Berlin in second from Wolfsburg in seventh. Bayer Leverkusen are a further five behind the Wolves but they too could soon be in the conversation, having won each of their last five matches under Xabi Alonso.

Eintracht Frankfurt are among the teams in contention. They head into matchday 18 in fourth place, above Borussia Dortmund and Freiburg on goal difference alone. That shows how tight things are in the upper portion of the Bundesliga table.

Frankfurt are ticking along nicely under Oliver Glasner. They only finished 11th last term, but that was in large part because they understandably chose to prioritize the Europa League, a decision which paid off as Frankfurt went on to lift the trophy.

Glasner’s chargers have gone five games unbeaten in the Bundesliga while losing only one of their last eight. They are a particularly tough nut to crack on the road, with just one defeat at opposition stadiums all season.

Steer Clear of the Moneyline and Focus on the Goals Market

Bayern Munich thrashed Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1 on the opening weekend of the 2022/23 campaign. Back in August, it seemed inevitable that Naglesmann’s team would run away with the title. 

They still might, of course - Bayern remain the overwhelming favorites with the best online sportsbooks - but the last couple of matches have been poor from the perspective of the champions. 

Indeed, they could easily have taken fewer than the two points they have collected in the last week. Leipzig were the better team in the first 1-1 draw before Bayern required a late equalizer from Joshua Kimmich to avoid defeat by Koln in their most recent contest.

The sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic publicly criticized the team after that second match, and Bayern will be under pressure to get back on track on Saturday. They probably will, but the moneyline market is not especially appealing.

Instead, consider backing both teams to score a total of over 3.5 goals. Bayern have looked defensively suspect of late, while Frankfurt have scored in each of their last eight matches in the league. The visitors to the Allianz Arena will not simply sit deep and defend, but Bayern will be keen to make a statement after two sub-par performances in a row.
