Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher looks to be holding all of the aces going into the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. Pletcher saddles long-term Kentucky Derby favorite Forte, and Blue Grass winner Tapit Trice who looks to bounce back from an underwhelming seventh-placed finish in ‘The Run for the Roses’.

The well-being of Forte became a somewhat mysterious topic in the lead-up to the Derby, with connections eventually forced to scratch on the morning of the race by state veterinarians. The colt had looked uncomfortable on the Churchill Downs training track at times, and rumours had swirled for days previous to his withdrawal that all was not well in the Forte camp.

Pletcher played down concerns over the soundness of the colt, but the state veterinarian-initiated scratching placed him on a 14-day list, making him also ineligible for the Preakness Stakes. There can be no doubting Forte’s ability and his defeat of subsequent Kentucky Derby winner Mage in the Florida Derby (G1) was breathtaking. Yet with doubts lingering over the circumstances of his controversial Derby withdrawal, his suitability for the Belmont’s unique mile-and-a-half distance, and the fact he is likely to go into the gates on Saturday at odds of no greater than 2/1, he can be passed over.

Tapit Trice is a much more attractive proposition for Saturday’s stamina-sapping contest. While he might lack the class of his stablemate Forte, the $1.3m son of Tapit has an attractive profile for the staying test of the Belmont. His come-from-behind Tampa Bay Derby (G3) victory, on a massively speed-favouring surface, was a clear indication of the colt’s willingness and determination, two qualities which will stand him in good stead come 6.50 PM ET on Saturday.

Tapit Trice followed his Tampa success with a battling victory in the Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland. Crucially, during this race Saez managed to keep his partner close to what was a solid pace, and should the pair manage to do so again in the Belmont, Tapit Trice will be a hard horse to hold off. The Belmont can be a paradoxically speed-favoring test, so securing a good pitch will be of the utmost importance for Saez.

He should relish the mile-and-a-half test of stamina but will need to get out of the stalls and find an early rhythm in the mid-pack if he is to chalk up a fifth Belmont Stakes victory for the progeny of his record-breaking sire.

Others to note include National Treasure for Bob Baffert on the back of his battling Preakness Stakes (G1) win. The son of Quality Road may struggle to repeat his Pimlico trick and dictate such steady fractions this time around, given the presence of Tapit Shoes, who could go forward from the inside gate, and speedy 30-1 outsider Il Miracolo in the field. Angel of Empire is a solid operator but looks an under-lay at 7-2 whereas 8-1 shot Arcangelo looks an interesting prospect for his first try over two turns and could be one to use in exotics underneath Tapit Trice.

Our experts’ 2023 Belmont Stakes selection is Tapit Trice, priced at 3-1 on the morning-line.
