Ben Healy: Edinburgh underdogs can have their day

Tom English, BBC Sport Scotland

If you speak to his schoolmates from the time, you’re likely to hear what a hero Ben Healy was when he led Glenstal Abbey to their first-ever Munster Schools Senior Cup title in 2018, beating the might of CBC in the final.

It remains a special and deeply relevant achievement in the rugby life of the Edinburgh man, right up there up winning the URC with Munster and making his debut with Scotland.

“I loved the Glenstal one because if you look at the history of the school, we never won one, we were a B-school for a lot of those years [a private school, but never among the elite rugby establishments].

“For people who don’t know what that means, we weren’t even in the division for the Senior Cup. Then we got to the final [and lost] and then the next year we won it. We were the first to do it, with a team that potentially shouldn’t have done it.”

Asked if there can be certain parallels between his underdog school and his new club, who have never won a major trophy and who finished a lowly 12th in the URC last season, Healy replied: “That’s the plan.”
