Chicago Bears history

The Chicago Bears are one of the most storied franchises in the NFL. They’ve showcased some of the league’s most prolific players and memorable moments, including Walter Payton’s MVP 1977 season or the classic 1985 Super Bowl Shuffle.

Despite enduring some frustrating moments this season, the Bears franchise has a loyal and devoted fanbase because of the history of the club and the continued push to get back to contender status.

In recent years, Bears player Devin Hester put on an impressive show in Super Bowl XLI, making history when he returned the opening kick off for a touchdown. Hester still holds an NFL record with 14 punt-return touchdowns and was remarkably fun to watch during that 2006 season.

The franchise was founded in 1919 as the Decatur Staleys, named after A.E. Staley who was the head of a local food starch company and the owner at the time. Ownership of the team transferred to George Halas in 1920 when it became an NFL charter member.

In 1921, the team relocated to Chicago, changing the name to the Chicago Staleys to reflect the more professional, new league. In 1922, Halas changed the name to the Chicago Bears.

As was the case with many early NFL franchises, they derived the name from their city’s baseball team. A baby bear is a cub (Chicago Cubs) so the new name seemed fitting.

The Bears dominated the early NFL, quickly establishing a rivalry with the cross-town Cardinals. Four out of the first six league titles were between the two teams. This early era also marked the initiation of the storied rivalry between the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers.

Despite the initial success, the Bears struggled to maintain financial solvency during the 20s and early 30s. The Bears were also instrumental in the formation of a championship game and a playoff bracket during these early success years.

During the early and mid 1940s, the Bears continued to dominate and saw increased attendance, in part because of the addition of quarterback Sid Luckman. They won four out of the five NFL championships they appeared in during that era.

This was also the time in which Halas, who coached the team on and off during his more than four decades of ownership, revolutionized the game with the introduction of the T formation.

The Bears struggled during the 1950s, enduring a series of losing seasons, before claiming the NFL championship again in 1963. This era also saw the introduction of some of the earliest NFL stars like Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo.

The Bears struggled again during the early 1970s, dealing with several losing seasons. In 1975, though, Chicago drafted Walter Payton, who played 13 seasons with the Bears and is widely regarded as the most prolific rusher in NFL history.

Halas retired as a coach in 1967 and worked in the front office role until his death in 1983, when his daughter Virginia McCaskey took over as owner.

Shortly before his death, Halas hired former Bears tight end Mike Ditka as coach. This was the start of a new era for the Bears as Ditka’s hard-nosed coaching style and ferocious defense led the Bears to a Super Bowl win in 1986 and the previously noted Super Shuffle celebration.

Beyond the Super Bowl win, the Bears made history for their impressive record that season where they lost only one game.

Chicago endured some success throughout the rest of the 1980s and 1990s but nothing quite like that mythical 1985 season. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that the Bears were able to again become a consistent contender.

Lovie Smith, who was hired ahead of the 2004 season, brought the highly successful Tampa 2 defensive scheme to Chicago. The Bears were again a staunch and feared defensive team behind the prowess of Brian Urlacher.

They reached Super Bowl XLI, falling to the Indianapolis Colts. They have not reached the big game since but have continued some moderate success in the ensuing years.

In early January 2022, Ryan Poles was hired as general manager and quickly brought in Matt Eberflus as coach.

Popular Chicago Bears bets

Most sports bets are broken down into two broad categories, with more subcategories within them.

Outcome bets

First, is outcome bets which will be familiar to sports bettors. This is where you bet on the outcome of the game and are broken down into three basic categories — totals, spreads and moneylines, that are detailed below.

Totals: This is sometimes referred to as over/under and is a wager placed on the total amount of points scored by both teams in a game.

For example, if you feel that the game between the Bears and the Packers will be high scoring and you see that the over/under is listed at 37.5, you could make a bet on the over. If the combined point total of that game is 38 or more, you win your bet.

Spreads: Spread bets are a wager on the point difference between the winner and loser. In the aforementioned game, if the spread is -3.5, that means that favorite, in this case the 49ers, are expected to win the game by at least 3.5 points.

If you feel that is too close and the game will be a blowout because Tom Brady is too old and the Niners defense is too good, you wager on the Niners to cover the spread, meaning you bet that San Francisco will beat Tampa by four points or more.

Moneyline: Moneyline bets are the most straightforward. It’s a wager on the winner of the game. No muss, no fuss. These often have smaller payouts than spread or totals bets but are still a good way to pad the pocketbook.

Parlay bets

Second are parlay bets. These are more complex a win requires all aspects of your bet succeeding. A parlay is a bet on multiple outcomes and will have at least three legs.

For example, you could place a parlay bet on the Derek Carr to throw for more than 300 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in his Thursday night matchup with the Rams. To win this wager, Carr would need to hit all of those markers.

If he completes two of three, the bettor still loses the wager. Parlays often have heftier payouts then standard bets because they involve more risk.

Parlay bets are not the same as player props but are related. Player props are bets on a specific player to hit certain statistical marks.

For example, you could place a bet that Stefon Diggs will catch two touchdowns Sunday. If he catches two touchdowns, you win your wager.

Player props often make up the legs of a parlay bet as is the case in the example above, but parlay bets can also focus on teams rather than players. Several sportsbooks offer some kind of parlay insurance where even if you don’t hit on all legs of your bet, your wager is still protected.
