Should the New York Jets Draft an OL or a WR?

The New York Jets 2023 season is done for all intents and purposes. They’ve been eliminated from the playoffs, and for the 13th straight season, they’re looking ahead to the draft to save their future.

This brings us to the question of the offseason: Should the Jets add more weapons or solidify the offensive line? Both are vitally important for a team that’s put together its worst offensive season since the 1996 Rich Kotite team.

This debate will rage on all offseason, as there are two top offensive tackles, Olu Fashanu and Joe Alt, and two top wide receivers, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Malik Nabers, likely to be among the top six or seven picks in the 2024 NFL draft. Oh yeah, let’s also mention the generational tight end prospect, Georgia’s Brock Bowers.

So the question becomes, what’s more valuable?

In my personal opinion, the answer will always be skill-position players. The wide receiver position has become the most important non-quarterback position in the league. Teams are built around elite wide receiver talent now. The Bengals, Seahawks, Dolphins, and Bills were all built with the idea that skill position talent, especially at WR, was more important than building the OL.

The idea is that elite pass catchers get open faster than the OL can collapse. That in turn forces the defense to put extra defenders in coverage, relieving pressure, and creating more time for the QB to pass to said elite pass catchers.

Perhaps no team embodies that more than the Miami Dolphins. A team that in 2022 was 29th in pass block grade but ranks 13th in 2023, thanks in large part to a much improved quick passing offense built around their running backs and Tyreek Hill.

The other large component here is that the OL is a unit built around five players. Just adding one elite player doesn’t make it a good unit. Take the 49ers, even with Trent Williams at left tackle, who still rank 26th in the NFL in pass block grade.

So, even if the Jets add an elite talent at LT, that won’t make up for the deficiencies elsewhere. It’s more likely to hurt the elite player and drag him down than it is to help anyone.

What will help them? Getting the ball out quicker, for one. In fact, of the top-five scoring offenses in the NFL four of them have QBs ranked inside the top 12 in time to attempt, and three are inside the top seven.

It’s much easier to build a team around two or three elite playmakers than it is to try and find five elite offensive linemen.

New York Jets vs. Washington Commanders bet365 Odds

The New York Jets are favored to win a football game with Trevor Siemian at quarterback? What?

You read that right. bet365 has the Jets as 3-point favorites to defeat the Washington Commanders, even with Siemian at the helm. They’re given -160 odds to win the game outright.

Meanwhile, the Commanders are given +135 odds to pull off the upset.

Perhaps even more surprising is that the Jets and Commanders don’t have the lowest point total of the week. The over/under is set at 37 points, which is ahead of the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots’ 35-point over/under.
