Marchessault, Hill, Tkachuk among best bets after starting playoffs as longshots

The Stanley Cup will be in the building when the Vegas Golden Knights host the Florida Panthers in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final at T-Mobile Arena on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET; TNT, truTV, CBC, SN, TVAS).

If the Golden Knights win, they will be awarded the Stanley Cup. But the first prize handed out will be the Conn Smythe Trophy awarded to the Most Valuable Player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Who will that be? The odds at BetMGM Sportsbook say Jonathan Marchessault of the Golden Knights is the heavy favorite at -550.

It's a stunning jump for the forward, who was +3500 when the playoffs began and was even +3000 on May 16, two days before the start of the Western Conference Final.

But his rise is due to his performance during the past two rounds. Before he was held scoreless in Game 4 of the Final, he had 13 goals in 13 games, and has 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists) in 21 postseason games. His 13 goals tie him with Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers for most in the playoffs.

Marchessault's teammate, goalie Adin Hill has the second-shortest odds at +900 after starting the playoffs +10000. He wasn't even the No. 1 goalie when the playoffs started but took over during the second round when Laurent Brossoit was injured. Since then, Hill is 10-4 with a 2.11 goals-against average and .934 save percentage.

For the Florida Panthers, the shortest odds belong to Matthew Tkachuk at +1600. Tkachuk was also +10000 when the playoffs began, but his run of dramatic overtime goals in leading Florida to the Cup Final made those odds drop to +375 entering Game 4. However, those odds plummeted of the Game 4 loss.

A few other Vegas players who could be a good bet are forwards Jack Eichel (+1600) and Mark Stone (+2500).

Here are updated odds and public betting insights for Conn Smythe odds (as of June 13):
