March Madness First Four Odds and Betting Markets at BetMGM - March 19

We have four First Four games this week, but no promise more excitement than Colorado State vs. Virginia. Both teams snuck into the tournament after falling out of the rankings late in the season. Now, they’ll face off to see which will advance to the first round and which will go home.

Below is a preview of the game and our favorite bet to win.

Colorado State vs Virginia: Can Isaiah Stevens and the Rams Overcome an Elite Cavaliers Defense?

While both teams enter with almost identical records, they could not be more different. Colorado State succeeds thanks to its balance between offense and defense. They finished fourth in the Mountain West in scoring (76.4 PPG) and fifth in opponent scoring (68.4 PPG). While they don’t have many players who can shoot from deep, they are incredibly efficient from the field (48.8 FG%). Four players are averaging 10+ points this season, making more than 48% of their shots.

Virginia’s strength is their ability to play lockdown defense, allowing the third-fewest points per game in the country (59.6 PPG). Their ability to shut down great offenses has led them to a tournament appearance, but the offense has been a different story. The Cavs finished dead last in the ACC in scoring, managing just 63.9 PPG. That gives them a point differential of just +4.0, a major red flag this time of year.

As good as Virginia is on defense, we think Colorado State can do enough to get the win. The Rams' defense is good enough to limit a weak Cavaliers offense. Look for Isaiah Stevens (16.5 PPG, 48.3 FG%, 44.7 3P%) and Nique Clifford (12.2 PPG, 52.3 FG%, 38.2 3P%) to have massive games, challenging Virginia’s defense from the outside and down low.

Both teams are 5-5 over their last ten games, but the Rams’ balance makes the difference.

March Madness Betting Markets at BetMGM

The March Madness betting season can be overwhelming if you are just starting to wager on sports. There is a large slate of games, and several different bet types are available.

Below are some of BetMGM’s most common betting markets for March Madness.

Moneyline

Moneyline betting is the most straightforward option for any sportsbook. If the team you bet on wins, your bet wins. There is no need to worry about how many points are scored or the winning margin, making it an easy bet to make and track.

While moneyline betting is easy, the odds are not always favorable. The larger the favorite, the more money you will have to bet. This type of bet is best when picking upsets or wagering on close games.

Against the Spread

This is one of the most popular bets during March Madness. Unlike moneyline betting, you are wagering on the final margin of victory. BetMGM will list a spread representing what they believe the margin will be for the favorite. The final winner of the game doesn’t matter when betting against the spread, making it a great option when you’re looking to bet on lopsided matchups.

For example, let's say Wisconsin is favored over James Madison by 10.5 points. If you think the Badgers will win by at least 11 points, you’ll bet on them -10.5. If you believe they will lose or win by a smaller margin, you’ll bet on James Madison +10.5.

Totals

Betting on the total is another popular option during the NCAA Tournament. Instead of betting on a team, you are wagering on the total points that will be scored in a game. BetMGM will predict the total, allowing bettors to wager if the final score will be over or under that amount.

Like with spread betting, the winner of the game doesn’t matter, making it a great option for games where you are unsure who will win.

Prop Bets

Prop bets refer to wagers based on player, team, or game stats instead of the final result. Examples of prop bets include player point totals, team points by half, and if the game will go to overtime.

BetMGM has a vast catalog of prop bets, though several states do not allow player prop betting on college games. However, you can still be on game props, such as the first to score or point totals per half.
