The Denver Nuggets were favored to win the series going into Game 1, and they proved the oddsmakers right with a 104-93 victory. But the Miami Heat have been underdogs in every series to this point, so it’s unlikely this loss will faze them.

But to have a shot at hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy, Miami needs more from Jimmy Butler and Caleb Martin. Both were dominant in the Conference Finals, but combined for just 16 points in Game 1.

Miami and Denver scored a combined 197 points in Game 1. The Nuggets got their normal scoring output from Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, but Miami’s stars didn’t show up.

Butler scored 14 points lower than his postseason average, while Martin was 10 points below. Look for the Heat’s offensive contributors to step up tonight, which should carry the game total past 214.5 points.

Michael Porter Jr. shot just 18% from behind the arc on Thursday nigh, far below his postseason 3-point rate of 38%.

Porter surpassed 2.5 3-pointers in all four games of the Western Conference Finals. The 24-year-old is primed for a big Game 2 after slumping to open the series.

Relative to Denver’s previous postseason performances, their offensive output was below average in Game 1. But that makes sense considering it’s the franchise’s first NBA Finals appearance, and many of the players could’ve been feeling the nerves from playing on sport’s biggest stage.
