Biggest World Cup upsets: Saudi Arabia vs. Argentina is the latest

Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1 in their World Cup opener in Lusail, Qatar. The win ended Argentina's 36-match unbeaten streak in international play. Saudi Arabia's team was given only 8.7 percent chance of victory.

The United States beat England 1-0 at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. The result stunned the world, including the English press. Brazilian fans hoisted American players on their shoulders at end of the match.

Switzerland beat Spain in the 2010 World Cup. Gelson Fernandes scored the only goal of the game. Spain won the rest of its matches and the World cup final.

Algeria upset West Germany 2-1 in 1982 World Cup in Spain. Austria was accused of colluding with West German team to throw their match. The match became known as the "Disgrace of Gijón". Algeria didn't advance from its group. It prompted changes to how group-stage games are scheduled.

Ghana beat the Czech Republic 2-0 in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The Czechs had just beaten the United States 3-1.

Uruguay beat Brazil 2-1 in the 1950 World Cup. The match was played in a round-robin format. Brazil was heavily favored to win. Nelson Rodrigues, a Brazilian author, once compared the defeat to a national catastrophe.   “Everywhere has its irremediable national tragedy, something like a Hiroshima.

Son Heung-min scored the only goal of the game as South Korea beat Germany 2-0. Germany finished last in the group and didn't advance from the first round for the the second time in 80 years.

Senegal beat France 1-0 in the 2002 World Cup. Senegal is one of the smallest countries to compete at the tournament.

Saudi Arabia stunned Argentina in the opening game of the World Cup. The USMNT drew 1-1 with Wales in their Group B opener. They will play England on Friday.

Qatar soccer fans wearing the rainbow emblem were refused entry into World Cup stadiums.

The U.S. men's national soccer team qualified for the 2022 World Cup.
