THE LOWDOWN

BOCHUM

Despite having not won a single Bundesliga game yet this season, Bochum do at least sit two points clear of Mainz having draw half of their eight matches played. They were most recently beaten 2-1 by Freiburg despite taking the lead after just 15 minutes through Goncalo Paciencia, conceding twice before half time.

With home advantage in their favour here, Bochum need to make use of it. Draws against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have proved that they boast players capable of competing strongly in this division. But their performances need to improve quickly from a consistency perspective.

MAINZ

Mainz are sat rock bottom of the Bundesliga with just two points gained from a possible 24 and like Bochum, no wins accrued. Three points here would see them leapfrog their opponents but they simply must get better defensively. Mainz’s backline have conceded the joint-highest number of goals in the division.

Most recently, Mainz were comfortably beaten by Bayern Munich with the result never in doubt once the visitors had taken a two-goal lead before the 20-minute mark. Anthony Caci pulled a goal back before Thomas Tuchel’s side restored their two-goal advantage in the second half.

THE TEAM NEWS

BOCHUM

Defender Patrick Osterhage is doubtful for Mainz with a muscle problem, whilst the likes of Bero, Esser, Mousset and Tolba are all out through injury. Of the four players definitely missing here, Lys Mousset is the only one whose injury is not to do with his knee.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Riemann; Ordets, Schlotterbeck, Bernardo; Gamboa, Losilla, Stoger, Soares; Asano, Paciencia, Antwi-Adjei

UNAVAILABLE: Bero (Injured), Esser (Injured), Mousset (Injured), Tolba (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Osterhage (Injured)

MAINZ

Mainz are likely to match up to Bochum with a 3-4-3 formation. Anwar El Ghazi remains suspended internally by the club and the visitors will also be without Jonathan Burkardt, Andreas Hanche-Olsen and Nelson Weiper, all of whom are injured. A late call will be made regarding whether full-back Phillipp Mwene is fit enough to play.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Zentner; Van den Berg, Bell, Fernandes; Da Costa, Barreiro, Kohr, Caci; Gruda, Ajorque, Lee

UNAVAILABLE: Burkardt (Injured), El Ghazi (Suspended), Hanche-Olsen (Injured), Weiper (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Mwene (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

As you would perhaps expect in a showdown between the bottom two teams in the league, a frustrating, nerve-racking affair may be on the cards. Bochum and Mainz are collectively without a win across 16 Bundesliga fixtures featuring at least one of them and confidence within each camp must surely be extremely low. Neither have covered themselves in glory defensively though and this should at least lead to goals at each end of the pitch. Therefore, back both teams to score.
