  • Luuk de Jong to score any time - 7/4 with bet365

There was nothing between these two teams in the first leg in Eindhoven, leaving this Champions League last-16 tie delicately poised ahead of the return game on Wednesday.

Facing his former club, Donyell Malen gave Dortmund the lead midway at the Philips Stadion midway through the first half, before a Luuk de Jong penalty restored parity shortly after the break.

On the balance of play, PSV were the better team. They created more dangerous chances than their opponents, who were sub-par in possession.

But Dortmund showed grit and resilience to avoid falling behind. Given they were away from home last time out, a 1-1 result was probably a better outcome for BVB than it was for PSV.

Dortmund will also draw confidence from the fact that the Dutch side needed a controversial spot-kick - Mats Hummels got a chunk of the ball in his challenge on Malik Tillman - to find the back of the net.

PSV manager Peter Bosz described the game as “open” and “intense”, while his opposite number Edin Terzic admitted the opposition were “clearly better” in the second period.

Since the first leg in the middle of February, PSV have taken a few steps closer to the Eredivisie title, winning twice and drawing once. Bosz's side are still unbeaten in the Dutch top flight and are now 10 points clear of Feyenoord in second place.

As for Borussia Dortmund, back-to-back away victories in the Bundesliga have kept them in the top four, but Champions League qualification is by no means assured with RB Leipzig just a point behind.

For this midweek at least, both teams will be fully focused on booking a place in the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier tournament. Dortmund might have more name recognition, but do not write PSV off.

After a 1-1 draw in the Netherlands last month, will it be Borussia Dortmund or PSV who advance to the quarter-finals.

The business end of the campaign is still ahead of us, but this has the potential to go down as one of PSV’s best seasons in the modern era.

They have won 22 of their 25 Eredivisie matches so far, a phenomenal record that should bring them their first title since 2018.

Meanwhile PSV, who won the European Cup in 1988, have not reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 17 years.

Bosz divided opinion in most of his previous jobs. His time at Borussia Dortmund was disastrous: the Dutchman lasted just six months and departed with the team eighth in the table.

But there is no doubt that the attack-minded Bosz has done a fantastic job in Eindhoven. He has instilled an attitude of fearlessness in the squad he inherited last summer, so PSV will not be cowed by the famous atmosphere at Signal Iduna Park.

The Dutch outfit were the better team in the first leg and a similar showing on Wednesday would put them in an excellent position to advance to the next round. At the very least, PSV can force extra time.

The match in Eindhoven failed to really catch light. That was understandable given it was in effect the first half of a two-legged tie.

The opening goal on Wednesday would change the dynamic considerably more. It would leave whichever of Borussia Dortmund or PSV conceded the goal heading out of the competition.

That in turn would compel them to take more risks in a bid to get back into the tie.

Dortmund will probably look to make a fast start in front of their own fans, but PSV do not lack attacking intent either at home or away.

With all that in mind, we expect this to be a more entertaining encounter than last month’s.

Premier League fans will know that strikers who excel in the Eredivisie do not always perform as well outside the Netherlands.

For every Robin van Persie, Ruud van Nistelrooy or Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, there is a Vincent Janssen, Afonso Alves or Mateja Kezman.

Luuk de Jong is another centre-forward who has struggled to replicate his Eredivisie form elsewhere. Now 33, De Jong has hit double figures for league goals in eight seasons during his career - all in the Dutch top flight.

He was unable to be as prolific during his time in the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach, the Premier League with Newcastle United, or La Liga with Sevilla and Barcelona.

But De Jong is enjoying something of an Indian summer at PSV, the club with which he will always be most associated.

This looks set to be the most productive season of the striker’s career. De Jong has scored 31 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions.

He is not just doing it against Dutch teams either: including the qualifiers, he has notched eight goals in 10 Champions League games.
