Breeders' Cup Betting Odds for 2023: Cody's Wish Paces Pack for Classic

With about three months to the Breeders' Cup — the year-end championships for thoroughbred racing — there is no clear-cut Classic favorite. However, obvious choices for the Distaff and Turf have emerged. Get the lowdown on the latest Breeders' Cup odds.

The 40th annual Breeders' Cup is still a few months away, but there are odds available for many of this year's thoroughbred championship races, including the Grade I, $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic.

We'll take a look at the latest Breeders' Cup odds for the Classic, Distaff, and Turf below.

Odds to win Breeders' Cup Classic

Odds as of August 2, 2023.

Breeders' Cup Classic favorites

Cody's Wish (+700)

Cody's Wish is the sentimental favorite as well as the betting favorite for the Breeders' Cup Classic heading into the Whitney Stakes at Saratoga. The 2022 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner has won six in a row, including the Grade I Churchill Downs Stakes and the Grade I Metropolitan Handicap.

Trainer Bill Mott has kept Cody's Wish at a mile or under in distance for some time now, but he'll try his luck around two turns at "The Spa" this Saturday. How Cody's Wish runs in the Whitney could go a long way in shaping the Classic futures.

Forte (+800)

Perhaps the most controversial horse in the field, Forte was last seen winning the Grade II Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga on July 29, but had to survive a stewards inquiry after bulling his way through horses at the top of the stretch.

Forte won the Florida Derby and was the morning-line favorite for the Kentucky Derby, but was forced to withdraw due to injury. After missing the Preakness Stakes as well, Forte ran a respectable second in the Belmont Stakes.

Odds to win Breeders' Cup Distaff

Odds as of August 2, 2023.

Breeders' Cup Distaff favorites

Nest (+250)

Nest was a well-beaten fourth behind a trio of horses in last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff, including Clairiere. But Nest aced her four-year-old debut in the Grade III Shuvee Stakes at Saratoga on July 23, avenging that prior defeat to Clairiere in the process.

Saratoga's Grade I Personal Ensign Stakes on Aug. 25 is the next target for this talented Todd Pletcher trainee.

Clairiere (+500)

Clairiere won both the Grade I Apple Blossom Stakes and the Grade I Ogden Phipps Stakes prior to her loss to Nest in the Shuvee.

When she's on her game, Clairiere is arguably the fastest female horse in the country. However, she's far from the most consistent.

Odds to win Breeders' Cup Turf

Odds as of August 2, 2023.

Breeders' Cup Turf favorites

Equinox (+225)

Equinox punched his ticket to the Breeders' Cup Turf with a victory in the Group I Takarazuka Kinen Stakes at Hanshin Racecourse on June 25, good for his fourth straight victory, all at the Group I level.

He is currently considered No. 1 in the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings.

Paddington (+700)

Since running a mediocre fifth on debut, Paddington has reeled off seven straight wins. That includes a string of four Group Is, highlighted by the Irish 2000 Guineas.

He's trained by the world-class Aiden O'Brien, who has conditioned six Breeders' Cup Turf champions.

Breeders' Cup Track Overview

Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA will host the Breeders' Cup for the 11th time, which is the all-time record for the roving thoroughbred championship series. Santa Anita's main oval is one mile around, and a round trip of their turf course is seven furlongs (7/8ths of a mile).

Santa Anita typically hosts two meetings: a winter/spring one that begins on Dec. 26 and lasts through mid-June, and an autumn one that starts in late September and ends in late October. The track will stay open an extra week to accommodate the 40th renewal of the Breeders' Cup, which is set for Nov. 3 & 4, 2023.
