The 2016 Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita brought together three of the highest-rated horses in North America. California Chrome, Metropolitan Handicap winner Frosted and Arrogate. Arroghate won the Travers Stakes by 13 and a half lengths. He went on to win the Pegasus World Cup and Dubai World Cups. He was the most-earning racehorse in history at that time.

Johar and High Chaparral were in a dead-heat in the 2003 Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita. The trio ran to a rating of 130. Conduit won the race in 2008.  Conduit would enhance his reputation by winning the King George and Breeder's Cup. in 2009. Falbrav won an eighth Group 1 in Hong Kong Cup in 2010. He was beaten off a mark of 79 on his handicap debut at Sandown earlier in that season. His previous start included a decisive victory in St Leger.

Domedriver won the 2002 Breeders' Cup Mile at Arlington. Goldikova won it three years in a row between 2008 and 2010 at Santa Anita. She won 14 races at the highest level. Rock of Gibraltar won seven Group 1s in succession. He was held up in the race at Arlington and hampered on the turn for home by his stablemate Landseer. Domedriver had displayed a sharp turn of foot to hit the front and kept on to win by a length.
