Breeders' Cup Notebook: The "Math" of the Aftermath

Breeders' Cup Notebook is called "The Math of the Aftermath".

Europeans and New York-based horses won 11 of the 14 Breeders' Cup races at Keeneland this weekend. Trainers Charlie Appleby and Aidan O'Brien won three races each. Kentucky- and California- based runners won two races. The lone California winner was Flightline in the Longines Breeder's Cup Classic (G1).

Godolphin became the first owner and breeder to win four races at a single Championship. Charlie Appleby's horses won three of the races. Cody's Wish's win was the fourth.

Ryan Moore won the 20th Bill Shoemaker Award for the most outstanding jockey of the two-day event at Keeneland. He won Saturday’s Maker's Mark Breeders” Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) on Tuesday, Friday “s Breed‘s‚ Cup Juvenile TurF ( G1), and the Breed's Cup Juvenile Fillies Turfing (IRE) (IRE) and Saturday's Breed' s Filer & Mare Turfi ( IRE). He also won three seconds with Stone Age in the Longines Breeder's‼ Cup Turfs (GB), Emaraaty Ana in Breed •‬″‹‿‪‥․‟ and Dramatised in the Breed  ‗–‾‡‵※‮…‸„‭  ‛

Tyler Gaffalione and Junior Alvarado each posted their initial Breeders’ Cup victories over the weekend.

Modern Games (IRE) won the FanDuel Mile (G1) presented by PDJF. Order of Australia (IRE) finished sixth in the same race this year. Life Is Good finished fifth in Longines Classic ( G1). Aloha West finished 11 in defense of his Qatar Racing Sprint (1), Golden Pal finished 10 in his Turf Sprint title. Echo Zulu finished second in Filly & Mare Sprint.

Channel Maker became the first horse to start six times in the World Championships. Channel Maker finished seventh in Longines Turf (G1) and also in Juvenile Turfing ( G1).

Flightline, Modern Games, Cody’s Wish, Goodnight Olive, Meditate and Caravel won the Championship races during the Breeders” Cup at Keeneland. Mike Smith made $38,344,605. John Velazquez made $35,610,275. Joel Rosario made $28,062,535. Frankie Dettori made over $25,801,862. Pat Day made almost $23,000, Pat Bailey $22,006,440. Javier Castellano made about $20,887,600.

Bob Baffert earned $39,345,000. Aidan O'Brien earned about $30,625,590. Todd Pletcher earned around $24,978,030. Bill Mott earned almost $23,416,900. Chad Brown earned over $22,380,690. Steve Asmussen earned under $16,372,180.

D. Wayne Lukas has won 20 races as a trainer. Bob Baffert won 18 times. Chad Brown won 16 times, Aidan O'Brien 16, Todd Pletcher 14, Bill Mott 12. Charles Appleby won 9 times and Richard Mandella 9.

Jockeys won their first Breeders' Cup World Championships race in 2022.

Jockey Junior Alvarado won the race. Tyler Gaffalione won a race for the Juvenile Fillies.

The 40 Breeders’ Cup World Championships will be held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on November 3 and 4, 2023.
