Breeders' Cup tips and free bets at Santa Anita

The Breeders' Cup this Friday and Saturday is among the highlights of the flat season internationally, with the best horses around the world travelling to the US.

This year's renewal takes place at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.

Last year's winners included a couple of UK and Irish racing stars including Godolphin's Modern Games and Rebel's Romance, both trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by James Doyle and William Buick, respectively.

This year, there's a few chances from abroad at the US flat showpiece festival.

One of the most open races of the weekend is the Filly & Mare Turf over 1m2f.

Inspiral, Warm Heart, Lumiere Rock, State Occasion and With The Moonlight have a strong chance from the UK and Ireland along with Lindy from France and Win Marilyn from Japan.

Breeders' Cup tips

Friday:

  • 10.20 - Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf: She Feels Pretty 7/1
  • 11.40 - Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf: Agate Road 10/1

Saturday:

  • 6.30 - Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile: Cody's Wish 9/4
  • 8.30 - Breeders' Cup Mile: Mawj 10/3

10.20 - Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf: She Feels Pretty 7/1

There are some very strong fillies in this lineup, including Porta Fortuna and Content who will be ridden by Oisin Murphy and Ryan Moore, respectively.

The former of which, could well be suited to being upped in trip to a mile but despite her speed isn't at a price that's worth risking.

Especially over a few others here that look to relish a mile and these conditions.

Content, trained by Aidan O'Brien has always threatened to be a top horse but has been in the winners' enclosure twice this season.

She Feels Pretty is a great each-way price though.

Having run just twice is a sign they know just how good of a horse they have, winning over 5f on debut in July to suddenly stepping right into a Grade 1 fillies' contest at Woodbine, and won by over four lengths when going up by three furlongs.

11.40 - Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf: Agate Road 10/1

River Tiber was the early favourite but it's a big ask for a horse who hasn't run further than 6f to step up to a mile in a Breeders' Cup.

Unquestionable is right up there in the betting too, both from the Aidan O'Brien yard, but at least this colt has form over 7f and looks like going well stepping up in trip.

It does seem that this is set up well for an each-way play though on a US horse who is more reliable over a mile and in this country.

Agate Road will suit the Breeders' Cup to a tee, his latest run saw him turn the bend and stay on very well to win and that will be a huge benefit at Santa Anita.

That victory was over a mile and half a furlong and has much more experience over around a mile than the Irish raiders, but his price is huge for a horse trained by Todd Pletcher and likely ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr who have a plethora of Breeders' Cup wins.

6.30 - Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile: Cody's Wish 9/4

Among the big names and stories, Cody's Wish is well up there.

The popular horse rose to fame in the US with the horse's relationship with the owners son, Cody, who has Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.

Cody has to use a wheelchair and communicates with a tablet, and Cody's Wish has developed quite the friendship.

It had been Cody's wish to meet a racehorse as he developed a love for the sport and it was at Gainsborough Farm when the then six-month old weanling.

The pair got on immediately with the horse being gentle and compassionate. But of all horses, this one had a huge ability in the racing game and despite being a usual two-year-old colt, when they met again two years after their initial introduction, Cody's Wish immediately went up to Cody and was a calm presence as the two bonded once more.

Cody's Wish had three races in pretty tough competitions, but won his first when Cody was in attendance. Before winning another two times that season at Churchill Downs.

After those wins it was clear his ability over a mile at the top level was established and he went on to win another three before securing his second Grade 1 at the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile last year.

He's still in top form and the now five-year-old horse, has won ten from 15, including seven of nine stakes contests, never coming out of the top three.

8.30 - Breeders' Cup Mile : Mawj 10/3

Mawj represents a huge chance from UK racing with Oisin Myrphy likely to mount the Saeed bin Suroor-trained horse.

He's also another from the Godolphin owners who send out a few top chances at this year's meeting.

Mawj is still just three years old and as a filly as well gets plenty of weight allowance, giving her a top chance.

A win here would see her obtain victory for the fifth time in a row in this calendar year, having already won at Meydan, Newmarket and Keeneland already.

Her two-year-old career gave connections the option to send her out at big prized races this year and she's certainly made the most of it winning the 1000 Guineas and just two weeks ago in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup.

She wins all over the place and some others don't travel as well as she does, which certainly gives her the edge over other international runners.

The filly's huge eight length victory over Fairy Cross at Meydan was her first over an even mile and she's still quite unexposed over this trip.
