Calgary Flames General Manager Brad Treliving Replacement Odds & Top Candidates

The Calgary Flames and general manager Brad Treliving “mutually parted ways” following a season where the Flames were expected to make the playoffs only to miss in excruciating fashion.

However, this is far from the only change needed. The Calgary Flames want to be among the title contenders on the top .

Top Contenders For The Flames General Manager Job

After the team was eliminated this season, several players came out openly, expressing their disappointment. It was known that Brad Treliving’s job was on the line unofficially.

Treliving was in the final year of his contract and wanted to stay with the Flames for the 2023-24 season, but he now finishes with a 362-265-73 record in nine regular seasons.

Below are odds on some top general manager candidates, compiled by Gambling.com NHL reporters.

Calgary Has Begun Phase 2 Of Its General Manager Search

Don Maloney, President of Hockey Operations, has kept things relatively tight. Simply, that means there have been few leaks. However, it is clear that the Calgary Flames want to name a General Manager first. Then, that GM can draw input before commencing a coaching search. It is safe to say that Calgary is in a considerable state of flux.

The Flames need a General Manager to help get this team back into the playoffs. Calgary was close last year but blew too many leads. That, as much as the below-average goaltending, sealed the fate of Treliving along with ownership’s denials of firing coach Darryl Sutter.

Needless to say, Calgary needs a less tumultuous season where its management structure is on the same page. Developing and sticking to an identity may be enough for the Flames to see the postseason again.

Among The Calgary General Manager Candidates

One of the odder things in this whole affair is that the Pittsburgh Penguins were denied permission to talk to Brad Treliving. Treliving has another six weeks to go on his contract, but it looks odd.

That is something candidates will notice. Right now, it appears like Craig Conroy is the clubhouse leader. Conroy has been with the organization and doing hockey operations for the past dozen years. He has never been a general manager, but there is a first time for everything.

Brad Pascall is the other assistant. He is viewed as much more of a long shot. The Flames’ job has several twists and turns to go. Mark Hunter and Ray Whitney are probably in the next phase somewhere, but who knows how close they will get to the job. Some had pondered Eric Tulsky, Assistant General Manager in Carolina. However, Pittsburgh seems to be eyeing him in their interviews.

Maloney and Calgary want to move as quickly as possible. Since the 2023 NHL Draft is in a little over a month, time is ticking.
