Celtic transfer news roundup as Donny van de Beek told to U turn loan strategy amid 'sluggish' Fabian Rieder standoff

Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has played down their interest in Fabian Rieder - which could leave an opening for Celtic this summer.

The 21-year-old Swiss international midfielder has reportedly attracted admiring glances from manager Brendan Rodgers as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging in the Champions League next term - but the Bundesliga side appeared to be leading the race for the Young Boys midfielder. However, the Gladbach appears to have been price out of a deal by the Bern outfit.

The German outfit will reportedly have to sell before they can snap up highly-rated Rieder - leaving an opening for the Scottish Premiership champions to make their move. Speaking to Sky Germany, Virkus confessed when asked about Rieder: "The transfer market is still moving very sluggishly at the moment. We have a lot of players on the radar. Fabian Rieder is a good player, but not an issue at the moment."

And if a battle for Rieder wasn't enough, the competition to snap up Tete is ramping up this summer. Everton are the latest team to be linked with an interest in the player.

The Brazilian is rumoured to be a target for Rodgers this summer with the Irishman keen on a reunion at Celtic Park after being impressed with the 23-year-old during his loan spell at Leicester City last term. But a return to the Premier League could be on the cards, according to talkSPORT.

The Shakhtar Donetsk star - who is set to leave the Ukrainian champions for nothing - has reportedly been included on a list of alternative targets that Everton will turn to should they not complete a deal for Leeds United winger Willy Gnonto this summer. The report says the Leeds player is not ‘completely sold’ on a move to Goodison Park.

Elsewhere, Donny van de Beek has been floated as a potential target for the Hoops this summer. And the midfielder left the door open to a move following a scoring return to the Manchester United starting line-up in the pre-season friendly against Lyon at Murrayfield.

While the Netherlands international has directly addressed a move to Parkhead this summer, any agreement would most likely be on loan due to the massive price tag and wages the 26-year-old is on at Old Trafford. But former Old Trafford star Louis Saha has issued a plea for Van de Beek to abandon his exit strategy.

He told Betting Odds: "I think it’s going to be interesting to see where Donny’s fitness is in the next few days. One good pre-season game is good (against Lyon), but it’s not enough. He needs to add some consistency into his game and improve his mentality after coming back from an injury.

"The signing of Casemiro really helps players like Donny van de Beek, the creative players can thrive as they don’t have to focus on defensive duties. If Donny can understand his role, he’s a very smart player, he will have success at United, but he has to be patient and be willing to go out of his comfort zone.

"He’s a Dutch international, it’s not like he’s a bad player. With Casemiro and Mount now in the squad the midfield style is different so it’ll be exciting to see where he fits in."
