Champion NZ galloper Jimmy Choux dies

Sad news has reached the racing community with the passing of Jimmy Choux, a beloved figure in New Zealand racing. The former Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) winner and accomplished stallion was humanely euthanised earlier this week, marking the end of an era in the sport.

Jimmy Choux’s remarkable achievements in the 2011 racing calendar made him a standout story in New Zealand racing. Throughout that year, he clinched four Group 1 titles and came agonizingly close to a fifth, finishing as the runner-up to Pinker Pinker in the prestigious Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

Owned and bred by Richard and Liz Wood, Jimmy Choux’s success under the guidance of fledgling trainer John Bary and former jumps jockey turned flat rider Jonathan Riddell propelled them into the spotlight. Bary fondly remembers his cherished mate and stable star, paying tribute to the horse who played a pivotal role in their careers.

“We received the heartbreaking news from his home at Rosalee Park Stud in Western Australia on Tuesday that he had to be humanely euthanised due to nose cancer,” Bary shared. “Reflecting on Jimmy Choux’s journey brings back cherished memories. He was not only a talented racehorse but also a wonderful character who left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.”

Bary expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support Jimmy Choux received from the public, highlighting the special bond between the horse and his fans. “The outpouring of affection from the public was remarkable. Jimmy Choux reciprocated that love by giving his all every time he stepped onto the track.”

Despite not being a natural talent, Jimmy Choux’s immense heart and intelligence allowed him to achieve feats beyond expectation. Bary reflects, “He may not have been born with exceptional talent, but his determination and intelligence set him apart. We were truly fortunate to have him in our stable, and he will be dearly missed. It would be a privilege to have more horses like him in the future.”

Jimmy Choux leaves behind a legacy that will be fondly remembered by racing enthusiasts worldwide, embodying the spirit of resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
