Champions League quarter-final and semi-final draws: Date, time and how to follow

The Champions League round of 16 concludes today, with two teams set to join Benfica, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Manchester City and Inter in the last eight.

Liverpool need to upset the odds against Real Madrid after they lost the first leg at Anfield 5-2, while Napoli enjoy a two-goal advantage over Eintracht Frankfurt.

The draw for the business end of the tournament takes place on Friday and each side’s path to the final in Istanbul will become clearer as the semi-final draw is carried out on the same day.

Here are all the details ahead of both draws.

When is the quarter-final draw?

The quarter-final draw will take place on Friday, March 17 at 11am GMT (12pm CET, 7am EST, 4am PT) at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland — the venue for all of UEFA’s major draws.

It will be followed by the draw for the two semi-finals and another draw to identify which side of the draw will produce the home team for the final.

The draw process will be broadcast on BT Sport in the UK as well as streamed live on UEFA.com.

Which teams are in the quarter-final draw?

Already qualified

Benfica were the first team to secure passage to the quarter-finals — they thrashed Club Brugge 7-1 on aggregate, bringing an end to Scott Parker’s short tenure with the Belgian club.

Chelsea soon followed the team they beat in the 2013 Europa League final as they overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Borussia Dortmund with a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Bayern Munich became the third team into the last eight with a professional 2-0 win (3-0 on aggregate) against French champions Paris Saint-Germain, condemning them to a fifth exit in seven years at the last 16 stage.

PSG were followed out by Tottenham Hotspur who failed to score across both legs against ACMilan. A seventh-minute goal from Brahim Diaz at the San Siro in the first leg was enough to take them through at the expense of Antonio Conte’s side.

Inter Milan then joined their city rivals in the quarter-final, the first time they have both been in the last eight since 2005-06. They led Porto 1-0 after the first leg before weathering a late storm at Estadio do Dragao to hang onto the slander advantage.

After a 1-1 draw against RB Leipzig, Manchester City stamped their authority of this season’s Champions League. Five goals from Erling Haaland helped Pep Guardiola’s to an emphatic 7-0 win in the second leg.

Still to be decided

On Wednesday, the final two quarter-final places will be decided, although it looks like a formality — Napoli and Real Madrid already have one foot apiece in the last eight.

The Serie A leaders won 2-0 away to Frankfurt in the first leg while the Champions League holders took Liverpool apart at Anfield, winning 5-2.

What are the rules of the draw?

They are both open draws so teams from the same countries will be able to meet at this stage and teams that met in the group stage are able to be drawn against each other.

It is also worth pointing out that the away goals rule is no longer in operation across the European competitions.
