ChatGPT ranks the most intimidating SEC stadiums to play in

From Tennessee’s iconic checkerboard Neyland Stadium to Athens’ Between the Hedges –– each school’s stadium has its rituals and traditions that help make college football in the South the region’s favorite pastime.

I a list of the most difficult SEC football stadiums to play in, but I wanted to get another perspective.

To help, I turned to ChatGPT, a language model trained by OpenAI. I asked it to analyze the SEC’s fan bases and the atmosphere they create during home games. Based on its research and analysis, it provided a ranking of the most intimidating atmospheres in the SEC.

ChatGPT’s rankings of the SEC’s most intimidating atmospheres:

Where I ranked it: No. 14

My thoughts: Yep, this is about right for the Commodores. It’s typically a noon kickoff, and Vandy’s fans expect to lose. A bad combo.

Where I ranked it: No. 12

My thoughts: Also agree with ChatGPT here. But I will say this place can get pretty loud during big games. The problem is it does not last long.

Where I ranked it: No. 10

My thoughts: ChatGPT and I are on the same page yet again. It’s just hard to be all that intimidating when your team is usually guaranteed at least four losses per season.

Where I ranked it: No. 2

My thoughts: And we have our first disagreement. ChatGPT, you’ve clearly never been to a game in Columbia and witnessed Sandstorm blasting. You also must have missed the Georgia-South Carolina game in 2012. Call me crazy, but I consider Williams-Brice the second most intimidating atmosphere in the SEC.

Where I ranked it: No. 11

My thoughts: Back on track here. But let’s give some credit to Wildcats fans. They have the second-smallest stadium in the SEC but check in at No. 10 here. That’s because when Kentucky’s competitive, its fans don’t let up.

Where I ranked it: No. 13

My thoughts: I personally had it as the second least intimidating place in the conference. It’s the oldest stadium in the SEC and second oldest in the Football Bowl Subdivision (behind Georgia Tech). But it’s too small, and the cowbells don’t really scare anyone.

Where I ranked it: No. 9

My thoughts: Again, on the same page. Ole Miss fans simply want to have fun. They can be scary when they need to, but for the most part they’re focused on having a good time.

Where I ranked it: No. 7

My thoughts: I also had Jordan-Hare at No. 7. When Auburn fields a good program, this place gets crazy. But does it get louder than the remaining venues on this list?

Where I ranked it: No. 4

My thoughts: There’s no doubt The Swamp is one of America’s toughest places to play a football game. Look at how the stadium’s built. No matter where in the stadium you are, you’re basically right on top of the sideline.

Where I ranked it: No. 8

My thoughts: I have to agree with ChatGPT here. When I made my rankings two years ago, Tennessee was irrelevant and its fans looked seemed out of steam. But the environment against Alabama last season was out of this world. I’ll take the L here.

Tennessee’s 2023 title odds: +3000, per BetMGM

Where I ranked it: No. 3

My thoughts: This is a pretty fair spot for the two-time defending national champions. That atmosphere against Tennessee last season was insane. I’m still not sure anything will ever top 2013 vs. LSU. Sanford can get very, very loud.

Georgia’s 2023 title odds: +300

Where I ranked it: No. 6

My thoughts: I know I had it at No. 6, but I have no issue with ChatGPT giving the 12th Man some love at No. 3. It’s the league’s biggest stadium and is absolutely deafening.

Texas A&M’s 2023 title odds: +5000

Where I ranked it: No. 5

My thoughts: I don’t agree with a No. 2 ranking for Bryant-Denny. This is a spoiled fan base that does not get as loud as some other programs’. I think No. 5 was a fair ranking. I was curious about ChatGPT’s reasoning behind this ranking, so I asked it to elaborate.

What ChatGPT said: “Bryant-Denny Stadium’s ranking at No. 2 could be attributed to its seating capacity of over 100,000 and the intensity of its passionate fan base. The passionate fan base has helped create a raucous atmosphere that can be difficult for visiting teams to overcome.”

Alabama’s 2023 title odds: +600

Where I ranked it: No. 1

My thoughts: No complaints here. It’s nearly impossible to find a better college football atmosphere than on a Saturday night in Baton Rouge. Tiger fans have no mercy and make it clear that visiting Death Valley is not for everybody.

LSU’s 2023 title odds: +2000
