Cheltenham Festival Day Two Betting Strategy
It is widely believed the Queen Mother Champion Chase will be a straight shootout between Edwardstone and Energumene, who is looking to go back to back after completing Willie Mullins’ set last year. Although, it may be worth keeping an eye on Greaneteen, with Paul Nicholls training a joint-record six winners (level with Nicky Henderson).
Nicholls also leads the way with four triumphs in the Grand Annual Steeplechase, in which seven of the last 10 winners have come home at double-figure odds. In fact, the two handicaps in 2022 were won by horses starting at 28/1 and 50/1.
No horse has even won the other – the Coral Cup – more than once, though Henderson has enjoyed a record four wins.
Meanwhile, Mullins has dominated the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase and Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle (five wins each), and Irish runners have prevailed in the last five editions of the latter. You should keep a close eye on the Irish in the Champion Bumper, with Mullins (four) and Gordon Elliott (two) sharing the last six editions.
Speaking of Elliott, it is worth seeing who he enters in the Cross Country Chase, which should be fairly open following Tiger Roll’s retirement. He has won four of the last six races, with his horses finishing first, second and sixth in 2021.
