The League Against Cruel Sports issues statement following the death of Copper Gone West during the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

68 horses have died at Cheltenham Festival since 2000. In 2019 alone 173 horses died during competitive races. League Against Cruel Sports calls for tighter safety measures and formation of an independent regulatory body with horse welfare at its heart.

Chris Luffingham is calling for the racing industry to give horse welfare the priority. There are an average of 200 horses dying on racetracks across Britain every year.

Copper Gone West has become the first horse to die at Cheltenham Festival. The seven-year-old mare fell in the Partemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle on day three of the Festival at the Racecourse.
