She did have to overcome a gritty Caroline Dolehide, who served for the first set in their second-round bout, but the 19-year-old shifted through the gears to prevent the upset and dug out a straight sets win, 7-6, 6-2. In four previous visits to Melbourne, Gauff advanced to the second week on two occasions, and she'll be a heavy favorite to make it three when she plays countrywoman Alycia Parks.

Alycia Parks is a talented player but not an actual elite like Coco Gauff. She is the older player in this matchup at 23 but is the lower ranked (82nd). But you can rest assured that Gauff will not underestimate her because she's in the third round on merit. She defeated Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur in the opening round for her first-ever main draw win at the Australian Open. Then she scored the upset in her second-round match, knocking out 32nd seed Leylah Fernandez 7-5, 6-4. She could easily topple that if she managed to upstage her compatriot on Friday.

Coco Gauff and Alycia Parks do have some similarities. They are both young and very athletic, but one of the striking differences is how both have fast-tracked their rise in the WTA rankings. Parks has so much potential, with a massive serve and the ability to generate her own power; she's definitely a player who excels in these Melbourne conditions, but is can be error-prone most of the time. Gauff, however, is miles ahead of her compatriot in terms of ability, with her greater consistency in her game. It is only their first career meeting, but hopefully the first of many. And this one will have Coco Gauff's name on it in the winner's column.
