Cody Bellinger next team odds: Yankees, Phillies top contenders to trade

Will Cody Bellinger survive the trade deadline and remain with the Chicago Cubs?

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal recently wrote that it’s more likely that Bellinger remains in Chicago than starting pitcher Marcus Stroman, but oddsmakers still believe there are a few teams that could end up with the star outfielder after the deadline.

The New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies are tied on the odds list behind the Cubs for Bellinger’s next team, and it may make sense for the Cubs to move him by Aug. 1.

Chicago is under .500 on the season and is sitting six games back of the division lead in the NL Central. With Bellinger set to hit free agency after this season, it may be worth moving him for any return if the team doesn’t plan on keeping him beyond the 2023 campaign.

Here’s a look at the odds for his next team: 

Bellinger has found his old form in the 2023 season. The former MVP is hitting .312 with 15 homers and 46 runs batted in, playing at an All-Star level.

He’d be a great addition to any lineup that needs some left-handed power, but the return for Bellinger may not be as much as a player who has multiple seasons left on his deal.

Here’s a breakdown as to why the top two teams in the odds – the Yankees and Phillies – make sense as potential Bellinger destinations.

It’s no secret that the Yankees need some help on offense, even with Aaron Judge on his way back from a toe injury. 

Bellinger, who homered at Yankee Stadium earlier this season, is built for the short porch in right with his swing, and he also has some Yankees connections. His father, Clay Bellinger, played for New York during his MLB career. 

Cody makes a ton of sense for the Yanks if they look to go all in to make a postseason push. 

The Phillies made the World Series last season, but the team hasn’t had the same magic in 2023. 

Philadelphia ranks just 17th in the league in OPS against right-handed pitching, and it could use a hitter like Bellinger to make up for the struggles of some of its other stars. The Phillies went all in this offseason by adding Trea Turner, so there is no reason for them to sell at the deadline. 

Ultimately, the Cubs need to decide whether or not they want to be sellers before any decision on Bellinger will be made. If you think he stays, the +200 odds for him to remain in Chicago are pretty enticing.
