College Football Playoff rankings, Oct. 31: Ohio State lands at No. 1 following Week 9

The College Football Playoff rankings were unveiled for the first time this season Tuesday night!

While we still have to get through the month of November and Championship Weekend, fans have a better idea of the teams currently in a position to carve out a path to the Playoff. From the B1G, Michigan and Ohio State have both been compiling an impressive body of work to start the year.

Though the Wolverines are currently the focus of an NCAA sign-stealing investigation, Jim Harbaugh’s team has been among the most dominant performers all season long. Michigan has scored at least 30 points in every game and has yet to give up more than 10 points to an opposing team.

As for Ohio State, Ryan Day’s team possesses an elite defense and some of the best wins so far this season. That includes a road win over then-No. 9 Notre Dame and a recent top-10 home win against Penn State.

Around the country, reigning national champion Georgia is 8-0. Florida State and Washington were also in the mix for a top-4 spot with 8-0 records.

In the end, the committee went with Ohio State as the top team in the country for the initial rankings. Being No. 1 on Oct. 31 doesn’t guarantee anything, but it does show how impressive the Buckeyes have been through Week 9.

Regardless of the committee’s rankings, Michigan is the current betting favorite in the national championship odds and is closely followed by Georgia.
