Colorado Avalanche vs. Detroit Red Wings Prediction, Preview, and Odds

The Colorado Avalanche are traveling to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan to face the Detroit Red Wings. Colorado is 35-18-4 this season and sits third in the Western Conference. Detroit is eighth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 29-20-6. Last season the Avalanche won both of their meetings against the Red Wings. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EST.

Colorado's Top Offense

The Colorado Avalanche are traveling to Detroit after their win on Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks with a final score of 3-1. This would be the third win for the Avalanche in their last five games. Colorado this season has been generating the best offense in the league averaging 3.68 goals per game. This is likely helped with their powerplay which sits at 23.4%. While their offense is thriving, their defense seems to have some trouble as they are allowing an average of 3.18 goals against per game.

We will likely see Alexandar Georgiev in net for the Avalanche in this game. Georgiev this season is 30-13-3 with a goals against average of 2.90 and a save percentage of .899. Georgiev is coming off of a stellar performance on Tuesday against Vancouver where he made 24 saves on 25 shots on net.

Detroit Relying on Offense

The Detroit Red Wings are coming off a win on Monday against the Seattle Kraken with a final score of 4-3. This would conclude their four game road trip which finished with a record of 2-2. This season the Red Wings have been struggling on defense allowing an average of 3.25 goals against per game. This seems to be at even strength as the Red Wings have a penalty kill percentage of 82.0%, placing them ninth overall. They have made up for their defense with their offense averaging 3.49 goals per game, ranking them sixth overall.

Alex Lyon has been confirmed in net for the Red Wings in this matchup. Lyon this season has a record of 15-8-2 with a goals against average of 2.83 and a save percentage of .912. However, in his last five starts, Lyon has struggled with a goals against average of 4.13 and a save percentage of .864.

Rating:

Colorado and Detroit are playing two different types of games when it comes to home/away. Detroit playing at home is averaging 3.57 goals per game and allowing only 2.58 goals against in their last five home games. While the Avalanche in their last five road games are allowing 4.6 goals against per game and scoring 2.8 goals per game. Both these teams have very similar stats when it comes to powerplay and penalty kill percentages and the style they play. While this game will be a back and forth game, I am still going to side with the home team given how well they have been playing at home recently.

I am taking the Red Wings on the moneyline.

Prediction: Detroit Red Wings Moneyline ( +120 )

Rating:

I am having difficulties justifying the game going over seven in this matchup. While both teams are offensively driven and do not focus on defending as much, I still believe Detroit will not allow as many goals to take us over seven goals. Alexandar Georgiev in his career has a goals against average of 2.47 against the Red Wings and Alex Lyon has a goals against average of 3.00 in his career against the Avalanche. While both goaltenders are not the greatest I do not believe they will allow more than four goals each.

I am taking the under at 7.

Prediction: Under 7 ( -137 )
