Deion Sanders and his Colorado Buffaloes stole the Week 1 headlines, stunning TCU in a 45-42 shootout on the road. The Buffaloes were multiple-possession underdogs last week against the Frogs, but the team enters its home opener against the Nebraska Cornhuskers as slight favorites.
The Matt Rhule era in Nebraska is opening with two road contests, and the first leg ended in a 13-10 loss to Minnesota. The Huskers led 10-3 with under five minutes left in the game, but two back-breaking turnovers on their final two drives gave Minnesota a touchdown and then a game-winning field goal as time expired.
The game did not help settle the long-standing thought of Nebraska as a team that can’t close out close games, but the running attack was something that could be built upon. Nebraska totaled 181 rushing yards against Minnesota, averaging 4.9 yards per carry. On the other side of the ball, the Huskers allowed just 55 rushing yards.
Stout play on the line of scrimmage is something Rhule is looking to build in Lincoln. The Cornhuskers will be looking to dominate the trenches against Colorado, a team that allowed 262 rushing yards last week and generated just 55.
One reason the Buffaloes only had 55 rushing yards, though, might be the 510 yards they earned through the air. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders grabbed the attention of the nation in Fort Worth, launching four touchdowns and completing 81 percent of his passes. His dazzling performance, alongside a masterclass from two-way star Travis Hunter that included 119 receiving yards, an interception and over 100 snaps, launched both players into the spotlight.
Colorado won’t be catching anyone off-guard the rest of the season.
