Hi, I’m Ben Fawkes, and we’re back with another mailbag question.

For the last 10 years, I’ve worked in the sports betting industry in a variety of roles. For a stint, I worked at ESPN helping to grow their sports betting business. But now what I enjoy most is writing about the state of the industry, and helping fans who want to get into sports betting make informed and winnable bets.

With the CFP National Championship less than a week away, it’s the perfect time to start betting on Michigan’s top sportsbooks.

When it comes to advice for new bettors, one thing I always stress is to minimize the chance of loss. One easy way to do this is to take advantage of asign-up promo which are offered by nearly every sportsbook.

I would do a lot of reading about how each team may attack the other on offense and try to target a few player props on either side. You can also play a few based on how you think the game will go, but don’t put all your eggs in one basket. In other words, it’s likely that Washington needs a big game from Michael Penix Jr. to win, but Michigan can likely win with or without a big game from Blake Corum.

Try and create a portfolio that allows for multiple outcomes. And remember: If you are confident in one team, you can also mitigate some risk by betting them to win the first quarter, first half, etc.
