Coolmore Stud Stakes G1 Betting Tips & Odds

The Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) is one of the marquee events on the Australian racing calendar, and the 2023 edition looks a great one. The trifecta from this year’s Golden Slipper is set to line up, and plenty of black-type winners will chase glory in this stallion-making event. Some 19 runners will thunder down the famous ‘Flemington Six’ on Saturday afternoon, with a plethora of winning chances to try and work our way through.

Coming off an impressive outing in The Everest (1200m), Godolphin’s Cylinder will jump as favourite in the 2023 Coolmore Stud Stakes. Horse racing betting sites have installed him as a $3.50 hope as he looks to break a string of minor placings in Group 1 races. Shinzo ($7.00) holds the second line of betting in a race he has been set for since the minute he claimed the Golden Slipper. Following a dominant win in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m), King’s Gambit ($8.50) is the only other runner at a single-figure quote at the time of acceptances. I Am Unstoppable ($12.00), Ozzmosis ($13.00) and Stretan Angel ($13.00) are the best of the rest.

Rank outsider Celui looks to be the obvious leader on paper, with a handful of runners looking to take a sit just of the speed. Ozzmosis draws directly outside Celui, allowing him to stalk the speed throughout. Steparty, Moravia, Tiz Invincible, Mexico, Snapback, Cylinder, Arkansaw Kid, Veight, and Butch Cassidy will look to settle close to the speed. The likes of Stretan Angel, Nadal, Scheelite, and Treasurway will be looking to run on from the rear of the field when the whips are cracking.

2023 Coolmore Stud Stakes Preview & Form

I Am Unstoppable is yet to taste success this campaign, but his three runs this time in have been impressive. The three-year-old colt was defeated by a neck first-up behind Cylinder and then finished second behind subsequent Red Anchor Stakes winner Archo Nacho in the Listed Poseidon Stakes (1100m) at Flemington. Last time out he was narrowly defeated by Stretan Angel in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1100m), but he can turn the tables this weekend. Blake Shinn replaces Zac Spain, which is an impressive jockey switch, and if he can have I Am Unstoppable in clear air 300m out, I Am Unstoppable’s turn of foot is more than up to Group 1 level.

Cylinder was only defeated by 1.17 lengths in The Everest when chasing home the likes of Think About It, I Wish I Win, and Private Eye. That was obviously harder than what he faces on Saturday, but how much has this campaign taken out of him? However, if he is at his best, he can blow his rivals away, much like his stablemate In Secret did last year. Tim Clark will stalk the speed throughout, and as long as Cylinder finds clear air at the right time, he will be fighting out the finish once again.

Stretan Angel got the better of I Am Unstoppable in the Danehill and looks the best of the fillies in the Coolmore. She has not run a poor race in any of her four prior starts, with two wins and two seconds to her name – and those two runner-up efforts have come by a combined margin of 0.3 of a length. She will be giving the leaders a start, but with one of the best finishing bursts in the race, Stretan Angel can blouse the front-runners.

The chances do not end there, with King’s Gambit, Shinzo and Steparty all in the hunt for Group 1 glory on Saturday at Flemington.
