Coronation Stakes odds, predictions and free bets

The Group 1 Coronation Stakes is the highlight on day four of Royal Ascot. It is a one-mile contest open to three-year-old fillies. Often this race features runners that have excelled in either the 1,000 Guineas or Irish 1,000 Guineas earlier in the season.

A field of seven has been declared to run in this year's renewal of the Coronation Stakes. It includes Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Tahiyra, Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Meditate and Nell Gwyn winner Mammas Girl.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien, who has won the race three times, sends across Meditate, one of four Irish-trained fillies in the field.

Latest Coronation Stakes 2023 tips and predictions

  • Selection: Tahiyra @ 4/7
  • Next Best: Meditate @ 9/2

Tahiyra can show her class again

After two impressive performances last season as a two-year-old, including a victory in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes, Tahiyra has fulfilled her potential in her Classic season.

She finished second at Newmarket in the 1,000 Guineas and then went one place better in the Irish equivalent of the race last month.

Dermot Weld was very transparent ahead of the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket. He claimed the race had come a couple of weeks too soon for his filly in the season. Despite that, she ran a huge race, finishing less than a length behind Mawj. The pair were a long way clear of the rest of the field and they are likely to end the year as the two outstanding fillies of their age group.

With no Mawj to worry about at The Curragh, Tahiyra shone again in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She was given a patient ride on the rail by jockey Chris Hayes and, once the pair found a gap, they pounced, moving to the front of the field and recording a comfortable success in the Irish Classic.

The daughter of Siyouni now has an official rating of 121, which is by far the highest in this race. She has the potential to enjoy success against the older horses later in the campaign, but for now she should prove too good for her age group in this three-year-old contest.

Meditate the biggest challenger

As a two-year-old, Meditate ran seven times on the track, so she was not short of experience going into her Classic season. She proved very consistent last year, with the highlight being her success at the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland, where she won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Aidan O’Brien’s filly was successful at the royal meeting 12 months ago when she won the Albany Stakes, finishing ahead of Mawj. She came home runner-up in the Moyglare Stud Stakes behind Tahiyra and was second in the Cheveley Park Stakes.

Meditate has featured in both the 1,000 Guineas and Irish 1,000 Guineas this season. She finished sixth at Newmarket where she was quite keen in the opening stages but ran on well. Just three weeks later, she produced a much better performance at The Curragh to come home in second.

Meditate will need to step up on what she has delivered so far to beat Tahiyra here, but if Weld’s filly has an off day, she is the one best placed to take advantage at Ascot in this Group 1 feature.
