Crystal Palace vs Arsenal predictions

Just over 12 months ago, Arsenal travelled to Crystal Palace for the opening game of the Premier League season.

Coming off the back of a painful end to the previous campaign, when Mikel Arteta’s men were pipped to fourth place by Tottenham Hotspur, it looked like a tough initial assignment for Arsenal.

In fact, they delivered a fantastic performance at Selhurst Park. They took control of the match from the first whistle and departed with all three points after a 2-0 victory.

Arsenal, of course, went on to outperform expectations by challenging for the title. They will now be aiming to go one better and actually win the thing.

The Gunners got their championship bid off to a winning start as they saw off Nottingham Forest 2-1 last weekend.

It was a nervier finish than Arsenal would have anticipated after Forest halved the deficit in the 82nd minute, but there was no doubt that Arteta’s team were worthy winners.

“It's always difficult to win the first game in the Premier League. I think we deserved to win,” the manager said after the final whistle.

Arsenal have to wait until Monday night for their second game of the campaign, but they will be confident of maintaining their 100 per cent start.

Crystal Palace could be set for a season of struggle and this encounter will probably bring their first defeat of 2023/24.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal betting tips

Arsenal should have too much quality for Crystal Palace in the final fixture of game week two in the Premier League.

Arsenal to win to nil - 6/4 (bet365)

The only real negative to emerge from the triumph over Nottingham Forest was the knee injury suffered by Jurrien Timber.

One of Arsenal’s summer signings, there were high hopes for the Dutch defender this season. Unfortunately, he will be sidelined for the majority of it and might not even play again until next term.

With Oleksandr Zinchenko also on the treatment table and Kieran Tierney being linked with a move away, it is not currently clear who will play at left-back on Monday.

Even so, Arsenal have what it takes to keep a clean sheet at Selhurst Park, just as they did last year.

Only Manchester City and Newcastle United conceded fewer goals than the Gunners last term. With Declan Rice now added to the midfield, Arsenal should be even more solid this time around.

They will also look to take the ball away from Crystal Palace for large parts of this encounter. Possession can serve as a defensive tactic and Arsenal will no doubt aim to take the sting out of the Selhurst crowd by engaging in bouts of keep-ball.

Palace are not exactly a free-scoring team either, particularly after Wilfried Zaha’s departure and Michael Olise’s injury.

A clean sheet should be well within reach for Arsenal.

Under 2.5 goals - 10/11 (bet365)

Crystal Palace could be set for a busy couple of weeks before the transfer window closes on September 1.

A move to sign Lewis Hall on loan appears to have stalled amid interest in the youngster from Newcastle.

And it has emerged that Liverpool are targeting their holding midfielder Cheick Doucoure after failed swoops for Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo.

Palace won their first game of the season last weekend, outclassing Sheffield United in a 1-0 victory.

They created plenty of chances at Bramall Lane but were not exactly ruthless in front of goal, a shortcoming that has dogged this team for some time.

The jury is still out on Odsonne Edouard, the match-winner last weekend. Jordan Ayew has never been prolific, leaving a huge amount of pressure on Ebere Eze to score goals.

If Arsenal were to amass a 2-0 lead like they did last season, they would probably be happy to hold Palace at arm’s length for the remainder of the match.

Gabriel Martinelli to score any time - 12/5 (bet365)

Gabriel Martinelli really stepped up for Arsenal last season. The Brazilian scored 15 Premier League goals and firmly established himself as one of the best wide players in the country.

Martinelli did not find the back of the net against Nottingham Forest but there is reason to believe he will open his account for 2023/24 on Monday night.

His pace and trickery will cause Palace problems down the left, and he has a knack for getting into good goalscoring positions.

Arsenal have plenty of attacking talent to call upon but Martinelli looks like the best pick in this market.

He seems to enjoy playing against Palace too, having scored against them both home and away last season.
