Dallas Stars at New York Rangers odds, picks and predictions

The Dallas Stars (34-14-8) take on the New York Rangers (36-16-3) Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Starsvs. Rangers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Stars have lost 2 heartbreakers in a row after a 4-3 OT loss to the Edmonton Oilers Saturday and 4-3 shootout loss to the Boston Bruins Monday. The Stars remain atop the Central Division with 76 points. However, some of their veteran guys are starting to slow down. C Joe Pavelski, who led the team in goals a few weeks ago, hasn’t scored one in 11 games.

The Rangers made a crazy comeback in the Stadium Series game Sunday to beat the New York Islanders 6-5. The Rangers got down 4-1 and scored 2 empty-net, power-play goals in the final 5 minutes of regulation to tie it. LW Artemi Panarin capitalized on a turnover to win it 10 seconds into OT. “The Bread Man” has 6 points in the last 2 games. The Rangers have won 7 in a row, and they sit atop the Metropolitan Division.

Stars at Rangers projected goalies

Scott Wedgewood (13-5-4, 3.03 GAA, .897 SV%) vs. Jonathan Quick (13-4-2, 2.36 GAA, .917 SV%, 2 SO)

Wedgewood came on in relief during a 7-2 laugher Thursday and stopped all 7 shots he faced. His last start was Feb. 7, though, and he allowed 5 goals on 31 shots to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Those are his only 2 appearances in nearly a month. He faced the Rangers in a 6-3 victory in November, stopping 30 of 33 at home.

The 38-year-old Quick is having his best season since 2016-17. He allowed 4 goals in his last start, which was a 7-4 win over Montreal Thursday, but that was the most he allowed in 7 starts this calendar year. He has a 1.99 GAA and .930 SV% in 3 starts this month.

Stars at Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 5, Stars 3

If G Jake Oettinger were in net for Dallas, I’d probably take a shot on the value with its ML. However, the Rangers are flying high after a dramatic win to extend a long winning streak. They’re also 19-7-0 at home.

I’ll take the RANGERS -145.

The Rangers have won 4 of the last 6 meetings, and 3 of those wins are by multiple goals. The Rangers are just 11-15 on the puck line at home, but they’re playing well enough and facing a backup goalie that hasn’t played a lot recently.

I’ll take the RANGERS -1.5 (+165).

If you’re not on board with that, I would take ARTEMI PANARIN UNDER 3.5 SHOTS (-175) if the price comes down.

He doesn’t have 4 shots on goal in the last 7 games and had 2 against Dallas earlier this season.

Dallas is 7-3 O/U over the last 10, and New York is 6-4. Over the last 4 meetings, 3 have had at least 7 goals. This is the spot I feel least comfortable with, but the price is right.
