Damien Oliver secures a farewell Melbourne Cup ride

In a fitting farewell, champion jockey Damien Oliver is all set to make his last ride in the Melbourne Cup astride Alenquer. The announcement was confirmed by owner Rupert Legh, ensuring that Oliver’s illustrious career culminates during the prestigious Cup week.

Ahead of his retirement, Oliver was honored with a touching guard of honor from fellow jockeys and members of the racing community at Moonee Valley just before the Cox Plate on Saturday. His race in the Cox Plate saw him guide Duais to an eye-catching fourth-place finish.

Alenquer, who recently finished ninth in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, is considered a long shot at $201 with online bookmakers for the Melbourne Cup. Nevertheless, Oliver’s exceptional track record in the race includes three memorable victories, achieved aboard Doriemus in 1995, Media Puzzle in 2002, and Fiorente in 2013.
