Darts Premier League 2023 Night 7 Preview

The Premier League Darts 2023 season rolls on with another brilliant night of action at the oche. The tour moves on to the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham for Night 7 this week, with the league standings taking a pretty solid shape at the moment.

It’s the bottom half of this week’s draw which is stacked. But will that open things up for one of the four from the top half to put together a big night? As usual, Michael van Gerwen looks to be the one to beat.

Here we look ahead to the Night 7 of 2023 Premier League darts action and don’t forget to also check out our full darts predictions for the quarter-final matches on Night 7.

Premier League Darts Night 7 Date and Time

Night 7 of the 2023 Premier League Darts is from the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham. Kick-off in the first match of the evening, which is Dimitri Van den Bergh vs Nathan Aspinall is 7:10 pm.

The 2023 Season So Far

Reigning champion Michael van Gerwen has produced a run of victories in the last three weeks. He took victories in the Finals of Dublin, Exeter and then last week in Liverpool to extend his advantage at the top of the standings over Michael Smith, who he beat in last week’s final.

For the third week running there was no change in the top four of the standings in terms of personnel. Nathan Aspinall and Gerwyn Price held down their spots in the top four alongside MVG and Smith.

The surprise winner of Night 6 was Peter Wright who claimed his first match of the campaign, beating Gerwyn Price. Wright then bowed out heavily against eventual Night winner Van Gerwen. The Premier League Darts league struggles continued for debutant Chris Dobey who lost his fifth league match on the spin.

Here’s a look ahead to the matches coming up in Round 7.

Dimitri Van den Bergh vs Nathan Aspinall

Right at the top of the draw for Night 7 is Van den Bergh vs Aspinall. Van den Bergh’s best finish this season was a runner-up spot on Night 3. He’s failed to get past the first round of action in two of his last three Nights.

However, he may fancy getting his season back on track again as he opposes Nathan Aspinall in Nottingham. The DreamMaker bosses the head-to-head record against Aspinall, the Belgian winning the last nine meetings between the two players.

In this Premier League Darts campaign, Van den Bergh smashed Aspinall 6-1. Will the big trend for the Belgian continue? Aspinall has been consistent this season but is the only player inside the current Top 4 who hasn’t claimed a Night victory thus far in the campaign.

Jonny Clayton vs Gerwyn Price

One Welshman will be guaranteed a place in the semi-finals of Night 7 of the Premier League Darts on Thursday. Price has won both meetings with his compatriot in 2023 at the Bahrain Darts Masters and then the Nordic Masters. That has seen the Iceman move onto a four-match winning streak over Clayton.

Price was a winner of Night 2 but only once in the last four rounds of action has managed to get past the quarter-finals. So this is an interesting match against Clayton whose quarter-final exit last week in Liverpool, was his first failure to reach at least the semi-finals in four weeks.

This could be a nail-biter of a fixture with both of the players looking for a little bit of a lift. Clayton is the one under pressure as he tries to play catch-up with the top four, but Price is the odds-on favourite to progress despite his recent misfires.

Peter Wright vs Mciahel van Gerwen

This is the headline match of Night 7 of the 2023 Premier League darts. It’s a fantastic heavyweight clash between two players who are having very different fortunes in the campaign. Michael van Gerwen has won the last three rounds of action to hold an eight-point lead at the top of the table over Michael Smith.

Wright went winless in the first five rounds of action before getting off the mark with a victory over Gerwyn Price last weekend. Wright then lost heavily in the semi-finals to Van Gewren, but will at least have been happy to have broken his duck for the campaign.

But he was soundly handled by Van Gerwen in their semi-final match last week. Given the respective form of the two players, it may be tough for Snakebite to change the outcome against MVG in Nottingham this week. He’s a heavy underdog in the match outright at least and Wright has won only one of his last nine meetings with the Dutchman.

Chris Dobey vs Michael Smith

Full-season debutant Chris Dobey won Night 1 out of the blue, but things have rapidly gone downhill for him since then. Dobey has failed to win a match since in the 2023 Darts Premier League, so badly needs to get some kind of recovery going as he’s rapidly fallen away from the top four after topping the table for the first two weeks.

Dobey has gone toe to toe with Smith fairly well in the last six meetings, having posted a W3 L3 record in that sequence. But he is the match underdog against Bully Boy who has been having another good season in the Premier League.

Smith was a runner-up on Night 6 in Liverpool to Michael van Gerwen. Bully Boy has lost only two quarter-final matches this season, so he may be the obvious pick for punters to take a look at on the night. He will want another strong night to strengthen his top-four spot.

A full listing of the season’s Premier League Darts fixtures can also be found, along with results from the previous rounds. The fascinating appeal of the league is that there is a very long grind to get to the top honour of winning the title.

There are sixteen rounds of action to get through in the regular season, before the top four in the table move through to the playoffs. This unique darts tournament format presents unique challenges for players. Under normal knockout tournaments, there are no second chances and focus has to be sustained for a short burst of regular matches.

The Premier League challenge taps into players needing to find momentum and motivation to turn up week after week and produce results. It is in a way, the greatest test of consistency a player could have. It always sees players slide in and out of form, going on a hot streak perhaps towards the end of a season to fight for a place in the playoffs.
