David Pastrnak scores 50th goal, making Bruins’ history

After failing to score on an empty net on Thursday, David Pastrnak’s 50th goal of the season was of the more legitimate variety.

It’s unclear if he meant to take something off his shot as he broke into the zone or if he simply misfired. But 4:43 into the first period of the Bruins’ Sunday game at Carolina, Pastrnak pushed the puck under Frederik Andersen’s leg to earn him entry into the half-century club. Charlie McAvoy, whose pass launched the mini-breakaway, had the lone assist on the goal that gave Boston a 1-0 lead over the Hurricanes.

Pastrnak is the first Bruin to reach the mark in almost 30 years. Cam Neely was the last one in 1993-94.

It’s the 12th time a Bruins player has scored 50 goals in a season. Pastrnak is the sixth Bruins to do it. Phil Esposito cracked 50 five times including his team record 76 in 1970-71. Espo reached 60 three times as well. Cam Neely got to half a hundred, three times. Johnny Bucyk, Rick Middleton and Ken Hodge each reached the milestone once.

Pastrnak was well on his way to 50 goals in 2019-20. He had 48 when COVID-19 shut down the NHL’s regular season with 12 regular season games left on the schedule.

He scored 40 goals last year.

He’s second in the NHL behind Connor McDavid, who had 60.
