Devils Look to Send Rangers Packing

The home team finally won a game in the New Jersey Devils-New York Rangers series after the road team took the first five contests.

Devils goalie Akira Schmidt once again was a headliner with a shutout. His teammates protected him well, allowing just 23 shots on goal as New Jersey took a 3-2 lead in the series after being blown out in the first two games. Schmidt has stopped 79 of 81 shots since taking over between the pipes.

The Devils did it all in Game 5, scoring at even strength, on the power play, while short-handed and into an empty net as they return to New York with a chance to wrap up the series.

Things got a little nasty in the final minute with Barclay Goodrow receiving a misconduct penalty with 47 seconds to play.

After scoring 10 goals in the first two games, the Rangers have just two over the last three games. Keep that in mind when it is time to make NHL picks.

When looking at some of the NHL news, other than New Jersey backup goalie Jonathan Bernier being out of action, there’s not much in the way of injury concerns for either team.

According to the NHL playoff odds, the Rangers’ odds moved from +1400 to +2000 after the Game 5 loss in the odds to win the Stanley Cup title. The Devils saw their championship odds go from +1600 to +1100.

Newcomers Deliver for Devils

While the New Jersey Devils have plenty of talented young forwards picked high in recent NHL drafts, New Jersey added some veterans up front during the offseason.

Ondrej Palat, a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning teams that won the Stanley Cup in 2020 and 2021, scored a goal in Game 5. Erik Haula, who helped the Vegas Golden Knights reach the Stanley Cup Finals, had two goals and an assist in the 4-0 victory.

Palat, Haula, and Timo Meier, acquired at the trading deadline, each finished with five shots on goal as the Devils rolled despite leading scorer Jack Hughes being held to one shot on goal.

Ten of the last 15 games played by the Devils in the month of April finished over the NHL betting lines total.

Rough Night at the Office

When the New York Rangers went into the Prudential Center and posted a pair of 5-1 wins to jump out to the early 2-0 lead in the series, forward Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Vladimir Tarasenko, Artemi Panarin, and defenseman Adam Fox combined for six goals and nine assists.

It was a much different story when the series returned to New Jersey.

They had no points and combined to finish -12 in the game despite having nine of the 23 shots on goal.

Panarin has been held without a point in each of the last four games, his longest stretch without a point dating back to the 2018-19 season. Zibanejad has no goals in the series and Tarasenko has no points in the last three games.

The Las Vegas odds total has gone under in seven of the last nine games played by the Rangers.

Each of the last three games has finished under the total thanks in large part to the scoring struggles by the Rangers.

Coming into the series, five straight games between the Devils and Rangers had been decided by either one or two goals. However, three of the five games in the postseason have finished as four-goal affairs.

This is the first postseason meeting between the Rangers and Devils since 2012 when New Jersey won in six games.

Hughes and Haula have three goals each for the Devils in the series. Kreider has five goals and is tied with Patrick Kane and defenseman Adam Fox for the team lead with six points for the Rangers.
