Did WFAN just pick John Sterling’s successor? New face on Yankees coverage

WFAN is expected to offer Justin Shackil a job, Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reports.

Shackil would be taking the spot left vacant by Sweeny Murti.

According to Marchand, terms are still being agreed upon but the expectation is that Shackil will serve as backup New York Yankees play-by-play caller to John Sterling. Per Marchand: Shackil will not be guaranteed to succeed Sterling if he ever does retire, but if a contract is agreed upon, he would have a long, public audition to be next in line.

The 85-year-old Sterling began dialing back his workload last year, opting to skip some Yankees road games during the second half of the season. However that plan fell apart down the stretch as Aaron Judgepursued the American League home run record.

In 2019, Sterling ended his streak of consecutive games called at 5,060.

Murti announced his departure on last month:

“My time at WFAN has come to an end. It was a dream job that lasted 30 years. Unfortunately, it’s time to move on.

“Along the way I was so privileged to work on the biggest events with legendary performers and personalities. The highlight of it all was spending the last 22 years talking to you about the New York Yankees.

“I tried to bring the right amounts of confidence and humility on the air. I strived to hold my own with the great host on our station and just tried to make good radio with every appearance.

“Everything good in my adult life truly began when I started as a producer at the FAN in March 1993. More good things are on the way, of that I am sure. I am eager to begin the next chapter.

“Thanks to everyone who helped to bring me here, keep me here and thrive here. Thanks to so many wonderful friends and colleagues who made going to work fun. And thanks to every one of you for listening and taking this ride with me. It has truly been my honor, and I hope you will join me on the next adventure.”
