DraftKings Account Takeovers Frame Sports-Betting Cybersecurity Dilemma

DraftKings has been targeted by credential-stuffing attacks. Cyberthieves have stolen around $300,000 from the company's accounts. FanDuel also reported an increase in account takeover attempts.  The company intends to make whole any customers that were impacted. The number of affected customers is unknown. It is a tactic where cybercrooks try to compromise accounts by using lists of username-and-password combinations gleaned from previous breaches.

DraftKings account takeover highlights security issues in online gambling. FanDuel has also seen increased account targeting. Online gambling businesses could lose their reputations if they are targeted by cybercriminals. DraftKings does not require two-factor authentication on its accounts.  Connecticut requires two factor authentication for all accounts geolocated there. It's a mistake given how much money is at stake. The stakes are high for online betting businesses. They need to be more secure. For example, they need more security measures to protect their accounts from theft. If they don't, bettors may lose faith in the sites.
